Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
I hope it's okay to post a few lines of prose here. It's my favorite piece because it describes my life so well. It was written by Langston Hughes in the mid - 1940s in the Negro dialect. I'll just pull out some of the lines. I'd be interested if any of you can relate to it , as far as your tbi goes .
Mother to Son
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.. It's had tacks in it, and splinters , and boards torn up ...
But all the times I'se been climbin' on and reachin' landins' and turning corners and sometimes going on in the dark where there ain't been no light.
So boy, don't you turn back; Don't you set on the step ''cos you find it kinder hard.
Don't you fall now, For I'se still goin' , honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair .
That's how I feel. I've got to keep going and reaching those landings despite my brain . There certainly have been times when

Thankyou holly...I can relate to that too. Never stop trying...Never give up...find a different way than other people see to a goal..Amen!

That would describe my life also. I feel some days that I am more interested in his recovery than my son is. Frustrating to say the least .

Thank you so much for sharing this today. I do not have a brain injury - but my son does! I am always encouraging him to keep fighting even though I do not know what he's thinking - but this poem by Langston Hughes really put words to some of my emotions as I attempt to push him along a path of recovery... very encouraging to me thanks!

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper?
