Zyprexa or Latuda?

I've been on resperdal for years now but my psychiatrist is concerned because my prolactin levels are too high and I run the risk of breast cancer staying on resperdal. He wants me to consider taking Zyprexa or Latuda. I'm terrified of a med change and would most likely make it in an outpatient setting.

Does anybody have experience with either of these drugs. Especially for Bipolar 1 mixed episodes. I have hair trigger mania and making a med change is serious for me.

I've never been on either of these meds but I most definitely understand the fear of changing medicines. I hope you can find one that works for you. Getting cancer would be devastating and if changing medicines could prevent it. It would be worth the risk to try something new. Big hugs.

Hi there,

been on Zyprexa, it's notorious for weght gain, and makes you feel like a zombie 24/7. never been on Latuda.

I've heard that weight gain is typical for both. My doc said its about the same as for resperdal which I've gained a lot of weight on. I already feel like a zombie most the time too - don't want to keep feeling this way.

Latuda made me go into hypomania, but it was great for depression. I only tried it for 6 weeks and it didn't work for me.

Interesting that your doc tests prolactin levels. Aren't there a few APs that raise prolactin?

Several of the AP's raise prolactin. Resperdal is one of the worse ones though. It completely stopped my periods (not that I minded lol).

Hypo mania I could live with - as long as it would stop there. But with my history it's never stopped at hypo mania.

I'm on Zyprexa & it can raise your prolactin levels, cause weight gain & cause diabetes. I have to have blood tests, ECG's & blood pressure test every few months. No medication is without it's possible side-effects.

Im on Latuda and i do like it. It helps me stay asleep at night.

Latuda is my miracle pill - seriously, it's been a total game changer for me. Messed with my metabolism something awful for the first couple of months - my endo was NOT happy - but it settled down. Wouldn't give it up now for the world. Seriously. I'm having a manic episode now, but for the most part it's done wonders.

I use Haldol as a prn. I took Zyprexa and Risperdal and as far as long term mood stabilization, Lamictal helped me as a maintenance med. I have bipolar I disorder. I prefer short term benzos and haldol to full time antipsychotic use.

I was on Respiradol for years and hated it. Was on Zyprexa I gained 40 lbs and was a zombie. Now I'm on Latuda and it's the best anti psychotic I've ever used. I didn't gain more than 5 lbs over a 12 month period and it really helps. It's best drug I've ever been on. Highly recommend it.
