BiPolar Disorder does not discriminate between race, intelligence or economic status....it takes victims from all groups without prejudice. Everyone has to treat the Disease with Meds and Therapy and strive for longterm Management and Stability.
I see the situation as his first sign of bipolar disorder. Maybe it's because it's the way it happened to me, but I was blindsided by a mania I saw nothing wrong with at the time. My irresponsible hurtful behavior was just the new me cultivationg my true happiness and I felt so great it never even occurred to me that I might be mentally ill until after the fact. Way after the fact. After my diagnosis.
While not a psychiatric dr, (I don't know how much expertise a pediatrician would have with mental illness) it's interesting that even a medical dr didn't see it for what it was.
Hopefully this will get him the help he needs.
I do feel for the patients and the family of the patients. What he was doing was not ok and he hurt more people than himself and that's not right. But that's the way with mania.
I agree bipolar definitely doesn't discriminate and no matter how smart someone is, they can fall victim to it. Maybe its comforting to a lay person like me that even a scholarly person can be just as clueless as I was during a manic episode? I
f the dr was off his meds on purpose that's a different story. Like Irish said, who knows how much of the story is true and I'm sure theres much more to it. I guess maybe I'm just more sympathetic to the horrors mania can cause and how hard it is to understand that you need help, and for the people around you to convince you that you need help.
People cover for others all of the time.... This isn't new
No one has said what the illness is.... this could be addiction?? perhaps
It's unfortunate for him that it's in the newspaper other then this may push him to reach out for help and I hope that he does
