Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

What do you guys think about this quote? Do you agree or disagree?
It’s not that some people have willpower and some don’t . . . It’s that some people are ready to change and others are not. —JAMES GORDON

I completely believe that some people are ready to change and some people are not.

Yes, agree that transformative change is possible, but that it takes the desire from within to take the first steps toward growth.

Yes and no? It makes me think of that old AA saying. Something about knowing the things that can be changed and accepting those we do not.?
Sunshinegirl0228
Agreed. You have to be willing to change or you just won’t

I think that you do have to be ready for change however change can take a lot of help often professional help and not everyone has access to it..... I'm thinking now about problems we run into with BP.... xo

Almost 5 weeks clean. No weed, after 2 years of smoking every hour. It gets easier everyday!

Congratulations, Triathlete, and welcome to the group! Did you go down the cannabis slowly or cold turkey?
Triathlete88
I'm an all or nothing personality. So cold turkey ;)

Willpower is the control to do something or restrain impulses. So regardless if you have the "willpower" you have to be ready to have the control and manage your impulses in order to change. Its kind of a Catch 22.

You are right kat and that is the thing that my doctor and I are working on little at a time
kaylab
I believe it. We are all here trying to change for the better I would say

I think the ability to change is important and learning new techniques and coping skills but when you are in a dark place and nothing seems to work you need willpower!!
oldbutwise
You need to have both. You need to be ready for change to begin the process. But without the willpower to keep at it that's all it is: a start. Readiness to change is the key that starts the engine. Willpower is the gas that keeps the car going.
