I just got my SSDI arrears check today and I immeadiatly felt my trigger click. Usually I just trigger on the first of the month when I get my VA check. But this is alot of cash and it is setting me up for failure if I'm not careful.

I will pay off all my debts first, it will be just like going shopping and buying things, like to finally own my car outright, and paying off my computer.

My wife will be watching over my shoulder so I have some help staying in line, and I guess I will need to take more valium for a little while.

Any other tips for maintaining some will power and not going money mad?

It sounds like you are taking all the steps you should.
I think once you complete the task (get all your bills paid) you will feel so much better that next time you have a lump sum like this you will know you can do it and not be so worried.

My wife isn't very apprised of current fincial things. Like where we should save the money or investin in the house or insurance or savings or cds and all that kind of stuff so it scares her just as much to have to think about handeling it. We talk about majior purchases and goals but she has to leave it up to me to decide the best way to approach the financial end.

Stick a good chunk in a 3 month CD so you have to wait 3 months to get it. It will give you sometime to sort out the wants and needs columns. Its only 3 months. Plus you will make a little money.

Put it where you cant get it.
use the two week pause rule. If it costs more than a hundered dollars wait a two weeks before you buy it then
If you still want it and it fits in withthe familys budget do it.
And always save ten percent mnomatter what.

Call Morgaan Stanley and put the money in annuities for when you are old. Ask your wife if the 2 of you can spend $1,000 together.

If you are worried about the temptation, give the money to your wife or someone else. You will feel horrible if you spend it and dont pay your bills. It is admirable to want to do it yourself but we have to recognize our weaknesses and put coping skills in place even if it means relying on someone else. You owe it to yourself and your family to pay the bills you already have and eliminate that burden. Hugs

Great Idea scott that one I will do.

BUT IT REALLY DOES GET WORSE...
I just read an email from one of our lawyers in FL and the sale of my deceased MIL property will go through by the end of april and we will get another lump sum (When it rains it pours) We have decided to let ourselves have a little to play with after the bills are paid, but I can go through a thousand just eating out.lol
