Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
The problem with drinking while on mood enhancers and antidepressants (and some other drugs) is, they both work on the CNS (central nervous system) --by depressing it. That is what lowers your inhibitions, lowers your pain, and makes you more depressed, if you are depressed, when you drink.
As well, your meds, although with different effects, work through the same system, and when both are there together, both can depress your respirations (slow them down) and your heart rate, until you pass out and may stop breathing.
It is similar to what happens when people die of alcohol poisoning. But you are just poisoned with meds and alcohol together.
AND, 80% of suicides involve alcohol consumption. Since BP's are at particular risk for suicide, whether depressed or manic, THAT is another reason why you should NOT drink. Whether you are taking meds or not.
Sorry to be the bad cop.
But this one's VERY important to know.
Alcohol is a mood enhancer. If you drink when you are depressed, you will get more depressed. If you drink when you are happy, you will get more happy.
Either one is still very dangerous when it comes to Bp disorder.
