Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
Having said that, I'm pretty sure there are a HUGE number and (I am pretty sure this has been documented too) of bp's that "self-medicate" to control their illness, myself included (in the past).
I can only say that you need to be honest with yourself. How often are you self-medicating (and yes adding beer to your meds IS doing that)?
And I can honestly say QUITTING drinking changes the way your meds work (you NEED to be honest with your doctor about this!!!) BUT quitting drinking WILL (and I say this from personal experience) stabilize your moods better than any other step towards wellness you can take.
It's hard. I think most days that it is harder for mentally ill folks to quit drinking than your garden variety "alcholic", though I am sure many would argue "alcoholics" ARE mentally ill.
Booze WORKS for us, in the moment! But afterwards and in between it cause havoc with our meds and our moods.
I TRULY understand. I only hope you do?
I'm good to talk if you want to, no judgement. Been there, done that so it doesn't occur to me to judge.
Way to go man, someone has to be the one to figure it out first!
Thanks for lettin me know!
I used to drink too. My fav combo was beer and zanax. The alcohol would get me all manic and the zanax would soothe away the hangovers. Rode that horse all the way to rehab. Damn near died.
I wonder what meds = ?
I know what they say about meds, depression and about my liver etc. but right now it's working for me and I just don't care. I don't want to live to 85 either. I smoke cigarettes too!
