Just wondering what are some side effects of meds you guys consider ok and which ones you can't deal with.
I'm bi polar 2 with primary insomnia. I usually manage with just trazodone but when I see my p doc in a week I'm going to ask for something to stabilize me. I'm dealing with some physical issues on top of the hysterectomy I had 10 wks ago and I need some help. I'm either crying or angry most of the time. I've been on lamictal before and I did pretty good on it. I stopped because I thought I would be ok without it plus I had the cognitive side effects, trouble finding words, etc.
My neurologist discussed depakote for migraines but since my migraines have stopped since my surgery I didn't need to start it. My p doc said he would prescribe depakote to help stabilize me but he said I told him a few years back I didn't want any med that causes weight gain. I guess I'm torn between dealing with cognitive side effects or physical ones like hair loss and weight gain. I've also tried trileptal and had bad luck with it. I wish I could try an antidepressant right now but they send me into mania so it's a definite no on those.

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

Has doc said anything about that to you?
I'm on Geodon which is supposed to let you lose weight. I also have PCOS which causes weight gain so I'm fighting a losing battle.
Hope you find what works for you
I was admitted to the hospital last week because I almost blacked out. I thought I was having a seizure. I got admitted because my heart rate was abnormal. I had to go through a ton of tests, stress test, echocardiogram, mri, cat scans, tilt table test, etc. I got referred by my Nuerologist to the Cleveland Clinic where they diagnosed me with P.O.T.S. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. Basically my heart is fine but there are automatic nerves causing my heart rate to fluctuate randomly too high.
I had issues before my surgery. My t doc called it a health crisis since a bunch of stuff hit me at once. My t doc wants to see me once a week right now at least. Maybe that will be enough. I haven't worked in 5 months due to my health. I'm not sure I can handle the anxiety of my dizzy spells, the depression and anger without help from meds though.
For psych meds I can't tolerate the mental "slowness" and struggling to stay awake (somnolence is the actual term for the side effect). Also Abilify in particular made it to where I felt "retarded", barely functional motor skills and inability to think at a normal speed. I couldn't tolerate that at all, I was trying to color easter eggs at my grandmother's house I remember, I kept dropping shit and couldn't answer the simplest questions.
Seroquel on the other hand made me binge eat, which caused weight gain and morning-after regret of all the disgusting stoner-esque concoctions I'd mixed up and ate the night before, but it wasn't intolerable.
As long as I still "feel like myself" and can breathe normally (some of the sedative APs can cause slight breathing issues) and don't have a headache or morning pill hangover, I can deal with the rest. Then again (tmi/gross mention coming up) because of having IBS, I don't recognize if I'm having an unusual amount of constipation/diarrhea because an f'd-up GI tract is the norm for me, lol. Although for someone not used to gross, weird poops, it might be a little hard to deal with. :x
The neurologist is trying to treat me with 5,000 mg of sodium per day,exercises,2 to 3 liters of water and compression stockings to start with. I also have to get 2 more tests. I wasn't going to post about it. I feel defeated right now.
I deal with the weight gain of seroquel but it's certainly not ideal.
After years of searching, I found Lamictal (can't spell the generic). I was dx'd BPII, but I have mixed states, too, which seem difficult to treat. This was especially difficult after childbirth....
Anyways, not at all being prescriptive or diagnostic here.
I tried topamax, too, but it wasn't 'strong' enough....
Intolerable side effect: appitite enhancement (seroquel), agitation/anxiety (pristiq, snri's in general), fogginess, dizziness, water retention, increased insomnia.
Tolerable: loss of libido, some sleepiness.
The trade-off is different for everyone. Lamictal has had antidepressant qualities.... Don't let yourself get too depressed.
Tolerable: some drowsiness (benzos), minor dry mouth (antidepressants), weight gain/loss, loss of appetite, high blood sugars, needing blood work.
I am intolerant to so many meds. It also seems I get some of the meds worst side effects and I experience them very quickly after starting a med and they get worse, it makes me feel helpless in treating all of my mental illness. I am currently on 2 meds that fall in the tolerable categories. (Lithium and Klonopin or clonazepam).
I'd also like to add that I have permanent side effects from meds that after the med was stopped I continue to have akathisia when anxious or panicky.
I hope this can help some in deciding what is tolerable when it comes to your treatment.
