I was wondering if anyone else is taking thorazine (chlorpromazine) for their bipolar disorder. I have used this drug for at least ten years and I have to say it is a godsend. I have NO SIDE EFFECTS at all until my dose is over 400mg (which is a huge dose that I have only been on two times in twelve years).
This drug, introduced in the 1950's was the first one in the antipsychotics to be introduced, and it paved the way for all the others. It is also being used for many other things now, including sedation, migraines, and nausea among others.
My usual dose now is 150mg, but I can take more (usually 50 mg) if I need it-my indicator symptom lately is hearing my mother calling me when she isn't.
I have tried all the "atypical" antipsychotics and the problem with them is that they all make a person gain huge amounts of weight and can cause high cholesterol and even diabetes. Not so with this drug. OF course there is the usual risk with all these drugs with Neuroleptic Malignant syndrome and Tardive Dyskenesia, but I have been taking this drug for the better part of twelve to fifteen years without a single problem. I suppose the only drawback is that it isn't available in a depot shot, where you get a shot that lasts for a month, but I wouldn't a shot that lasted a month anyway.
It's also a really inexpensive drug. It doesn't interreact with anything much, except that it might make you sleepy, but all the antipsychotics do that (it doesn't do that to me unless I take more than 300 mg a day).
So if anybody out there has anything to add, let me know. I think this is a great med.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
Of course a lot of people can't stay on the 'zines' or Haldol because of side effects but I didn't have them either...

I was on thorazine (500 mg) for about 7 months. It helped for a while. But like everything else it stopped working (and abruptly).
Right now I am on Zyprexa and it has been working the longest that any AP has worked but I have to be on 60 mg of adderall and 3 LARGE cups of coffee a day to keep me awake enough to function on it so I TOTALLY get the sleepiness!

My miracle drug is risperdal consta - it's an injection that lasts two weeks. I find the injection to be extremely convenient personally and it has maintained my mood for 6 years with no side effects. I got side effects on oral risperdal but not on consta.
