The people pleaser

One thing I need to work on is my need to please people.  The reasons I can think of why I am like this is because my mom was an alcoholic and stopped doing anything.  Dad and her fought all the time about her drinking.  I got so tired of the fighting, I started doing the housework to try and keep the peace.  Also they instilled in me that I couldn't have my way all the time.


I very unpopular in school so if I did things for people, maybe they would like me.


There's more but it gets pretty detailed.


Does any of you experience this?

So sorry to hear that you grew up around alcoholism. I, too, am a people pleaser because of childhood experiences. Sometimes it makes me feel good if my motivation/intentions are in the right place. However, it causes a lot of anxiety if I get a vibe that someone doesn’t like me, and I bend over backwards for that person. CBT thought strategies, like reframing, help me deal better with those feelings. Glad to hear that you’re working on it, too.
