Well, one you can ignore her and leave her to her ill thoughts or two, you can explain you have bipolar disorder and it can be dibilitating and you would appreciate her trying to be understanding. or three, tell your other relatives that you care about so they know what is going on. You may need your family for support and they can support you best if they understand what you are going through and know more about bipolar disorder.

unless you know someone with bp it doesnt mean much its not a topic of conversation get some books on the subject and get people to read them before they make judgements

Well, I suppose you could buy a book to give family. Or give them some sort of literature? For me, I know that I can't try and explain it - showing them is best. Maybe some sort of DVD? I'm sure people have better ideas.

Still, if she is a rancid cow, maybe she should at least be put out to pasture!

Alanon tells me that "the best reaction is no reaction" and this has worked for me for several years now.

Wait until you are at a family gathering and be prepared to divulge your secret. When the time comes ask her to come stand by your side. Then openly ask her to express those feelings that she has been expressing around the family. Then explain very calmly your dx. When you are done explain how there are those who are very uncaring about others and would rather speak about them than to express concern. Then show her as an example of this and walk down into the loving arms of your family. That is what I would want to do, but I realize that is a little much. oh,... then call her a rancid cow... and a bitch.

Most of my "distant" family don't acknowledge my illness even though my brother commited suicide with BP1 and I have made several attempts....she may just be one of those people who have made up there mind about you and there'a nothing you can do but ignore her.

just tell her ur going thru some personal stuff and it's not helping when she runs her mouth!

Another thought......Rather than placing too much importance on her motives and mouth. Educate yourself as much as possible about the disorder yourself. I dont know how long ago you were diagnosed, but if you know the disorder and yourself well, it is easier to explain it to the ones you love. I communicate daily with my immediate family about my emotions and cycles so they understand why I am behaving the way I am. It helps me not feel guilty and them understand. The release of pressure because of our communication about the disorder has helped me tremendously.

Oh, and Gran will love you no matter what, they always do. Mine loved me unconditionally. If you can share with anyone, it is your gran.

Good Point, Shelly! It really is true how much easier it is when we learn more ourselves. I've been diagnosed 16 years and I still learn new stuff! I'm still not sure if I could talk about it. Easier for me to write or show them. I get too nervous and flustered (try to show too much and get caught up in all the info).
