My son 21 who has high functioning autism and bipolar was awarded SSI first round within 4 months.
He doesn't seem that disabled to my DH and myself. He graduated from a charter high school for aspie and ADHD students. I guess it's because we live with him.

How unusual is it to get SSI the first round?

I'm bipolar and haven't applied.

Just curious what others' experiences have been.

From what I hear, it's not that easy to get SSI. Pretty much have to get a disability attorney.

Its not easy. They look for medical records and a physician saying you are disabled. Even with that you can be turned down. A lot of people get an attorney and appeal after being turned down. There is no guarantee you will get it even with an attorney.

In my case I had a hospital file for me without even telling me they were going to. They did all the work and turned in all my medical records. The only thing I had to do was answer one question and give them the other name of the hospital I had been inpatient.

I have SSDI but the process is the same for SSI and SSDI.

I have SSDI and it took me going to court with an attorney to get it. It took 3 times total. Good Luck

Hire your attorney before you begin the process, they can help you fill out the first paperwork. They get a percentage but the faster you can qualify the quicker you will get first whole checks.

My son did get his SSI the first round. I was just curious if others were able to get their SSI that fast.

I was able to get it in months. I have Bipolar and ADHD. I did it over the phone. I am blessed it didnt take long.
