Hey guys. I apologize for the length of this, but, this is something I struggle with almost daily. Let me say that I am a believer in both science and religion. They fuse together for me.
I was going to a bible study at a certain church and I tell them that I think I have figured out that I am bipolar. Well..........what ensued was not pretty.
This "pastor" took it upon himself to tell me while he sat red-faced and angry that there was no such thing as mental illness and that any mental illness exhibited by a person was a direct effect of the sin in their lives.
Well...........for someone who was manic and thought they were a disciple like Paul...........that was the most devastating thing he could have said.
That spiraled me into about a four month long psychotic depression where I wondered if I was demon possessed and all that. I clung to my family every day for life because I didn't think myself worthy of it anymore. That has been two and a half years ago and I still struggle with this question.
Do yall believe in spiritual warfare? Good vs. evil? If there was indeed a fight going on within me then for my very soul, then who won? I no longer go to church. I don't tell people of God's love as I used to or of Jesus. Who did win?
I just want to know what yalls thoughts on this are if you don't care to chime in.
Or does any of this even matter and am I an even crazier bitch than I think I am?
Hugs & Lotsa love,
Chelle

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

As an atheist so you may feel that I am disqualified to answer..I see a seperation between faith and belief and the established Church.
Members of the clergy are fallible and have often done (and still do) terrible things, some might categorise as evil.
If through their actions they have caused to to become disconnected from the church it does not mean evil has won as long as your faith is still there. Martin Luther left his church as have many other good people.
Again I see prostylising (spelling) as something seperate again. For the atheist like me it's just annoying and pointless born out of a sales type of culture. If you chose to keep your faith more quietly and discuss with others of the same faith that's fine. We don't all have to be missionaries.
to answer your question, i don't believe in spiritual warfare. i think it just creates more problems like you experienced zany.
I struggle with good and evil too. I dont believe my mental illness has anything to do with my soul. Nothing! I try and do the next right thing. That doent work too well most of the time, but its the journey and the effort that I think God cares about. I dont think that most people can come to claim that they are enlightened 100% of the time. Zany you are a real positive force on DS. Thank you for making me smile everyday.
That bastard has shaken the foundation of my very existence. I will never be the same again. I kinda liked feeling like a disciple must have felt. Or perhaps it was just the mania. Hell............I don't know.
I don't know if I should be one to answer this question since I am Athiest. I believe that we have our problems for a reason. To show how strong we really are as humans. I too wonder why I was put on this earth with the problems I have, and everyday I remember how strong I am to have gotten through the day. I'm very proud of you to keep your chin up and keep on trucking even after a pastor going off his rocker to you. That was uncalled for. You go girl and keep up the good work!
There is a spiritual war: Devil wins a battle when you are separated from God, and Devil loose it when you get closer to Him.
In this incident the PASTOR WAS THE DEVIL INSTRUMENT, as a result his actions you got separated from God..
Having a metal illness makes you nor evil nor saint, unless you give up hope.
"Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted"
[Mat 5:4]
Probably you've been looking on wrong places and got to wrong conclusions.
Thank all of you guys for your replies. It truly means a lot to me. Some say that if a deluded thought just goes around and around in a person's mind that it never gets any new light shed on it. By exposing the deluded thinking to the light of the input of others, it can then be re-examined and maybe dealt with differently. At least that is what I am hoping for here.
I was thinking about all the harm various priests caused in Eire, compounded by the Church establishment's desire to keep it quiet.
Don't let the fallibility of the organisation of religion marginalise you. It's natural that can happen, you are fallible and human yourself but I'm sure you will return to your faith fully given time.
That said I'd like to point out that your former "pastor" was not only an asshole, but should not be teaching a congregation at all. Anyone who would say or do something to make a follower turn from God and question his love for them is not only cruel, but going directly against the scripture they're suppose to be preaching.
When it comes to the idea of your soul, why would God abandon you in your time of need? If you believe in him and still follow his teachings, it doesn't matter if your preaching to others or not. He is the hand holding you up now and during every other trial in your life. What you went through and are still going through is refered to as the "dark night of the soul", every devote Christian leader/follower for the past 2000 years has gone through it.
Also keep in mind that Jesus himself said "Come as you are." That includes BP people.
