I hate to even think about it, but im starting to wonder now that my wife has left me, in an apartment, with no job, and on major anti-depression drugs; if I shouldnt consider applying for Social Security for my illness till I can get back on my feet, finish school, and get healthy again.
I lost my lively hood as a truck driver due to a major knee injury (not work related, so no help), and I need to retrain now.
Also im so depressed and drugged up (on medications) from my impending divorce that I not only am struggling to get out there and find a job ( i sit alone in a dark apartment most days), and even if I had a job I dont know how well id be working it.
Anyways has anyone had to do this? If so how do you go about getting the benefits, and how hard is it to get? Ive only been hospitilized once for my actual BP, a week after my wife left I overdosed on my Valium while talking about killing myself.

I use "Advantage Consultants 2000" to apply for my SSDI. I have only just applied, but you can call your local SS office to set up an appointment for an interview. There's papers online that you can print out and fill out to make it easier. I don't know the web address, but if you Google "Social Security Disability Forms", you should get it. I hope this helps.
You will need to have documentation from your Pdoc,outlining your DX,and weather he thinks you are able to return to work,not at all,or maybe part time.

If you are interested in rehab for a new job,SS can get you hooked up with rehab programs also.
I am on SSDI,work a small part time job,anything else is too stressfull for me.
Count on being turned down the first time..ALMOST always happens.....a lot of people hire a lawyer,I didn't..I just reappiled,and got approved without having to pay for the lawyer.

I am going to look into this. I hate doing it, but I just need some time to get healthy and do whats best for me and my kids.
If I dont get my crap together soon my stbx is going to take the kids from me.
Go down to SSA and get the forms. There is no harm in trying.
Most people who do not get on because the SSA did not get the relevant medical records from their docs/hospitals.
With your physical/mental/social situation you likely will get on. Be sure they get ALL medical records for ALL conditions both physical and mental as well as the impending divorce.
Once you are on, you can go through retraining with Voc Rehab and keep your benefits while you are in training.
