I've been helping my sister apply for jobs since things are getting really bad at her current workplace. There are a slew of good jobs with one of the local hospital systems and she's applied to several and had no call-backs. I think this is because of their no smoking policy that went into effect on January 1st. No one can be hired who smokes or has smoked in the last 90 days. I've heard they do a hair follicle test before you're hired. The thing is she's willing to quit, but they don't ask that on the applications. She's been honest on the applications that she has "used tobacco and nicotine products in the last 90 days" But maybe she should lie on her next round of applications?

I think this is discriminatory, but maybe I'm being unreasonable since I'm a smoker. Any thoughts?

Just because there is a rule or a law in place doesnt necessarily mean the behavior it prevents is bad nor does the absence of rule/law make the behavior even close to desirable

im sure smoking on the job has killed many people. sometimes fire is not desirable. but im still of the the mind that its the business owners property and the state should have no say whether people smoke in my tavern. its MY tavern. the law has gone too far when it tells bars and restaurants what they can do with their property. you cant have both but it seems to me if people know smoking no smoking. free will. dont go to a smoking place. in iowa u can smoke in casinos and the Vets Home

there are asthmatics, children, other factors

( I used to love to smoke- miss it fondly)..

.I guess now so much has been established about dangers of second hand smoke then maybe employers fear future lawsuits about ppl being exposed?

Yes business should be able to say NO smoking on the premises but no noone should be able to control what you do at home as long as you are not breaking any laws

I dont love to ignore laws but yeah the really ignorant ones I do

On the other hand I work my ass off to get a few of them changed so figures it evens out - I save dogs (with or without the laws inplace) and in return I flip off the pot smoking laws

watch the PBS show about whether we control these plants or they control us? apples, tulips, marijauna and i cant think of the fourth one. do we take these plants around the world or do they take us around the world. johnnie appleseed didnt sow aplles across the USA for food it was for cider. they didnt know to boil the water so they drank cider or beer, all day. at work. beer breaks

My young asthmatic son got much better when I quit.

He is grown now and smokes but when he was younger I was very glad to help his health a little.
