I don't think its right, nor do I think employers should be able to pull my credit and judge me on that either....
Tough job market - I've actually seen company's that advertise - if your unemployed do not apply. WTF? You are only hiring people that have a job already?
Wishing your sister much luck and success!!!!
Employers are getting much more selective in regards to their employee's habits. Smoking is not only unhealthy, the smell is offensive if you are not a smoker. I used to think that I didn't "smell so bad", lol.............now that I don't smoke AGAIN, when one my my sons comes past me, I can't stand the smell. It is usually right after they smoke but eventually all their clothes and hair smell of it too.
I, personally, think that as smokers we are not aware of how our addiction/bad habit effects those around us. I don't think it is discriminatory for any employer, restaraunt, public establishment to be restrictive about smoking.
If she lies and they do a hair folicle test, that will only look worse for her. I would stop smoking and continue to seek employment. She can at least tell them that she quit. We have to be willing to take responsibility for our own choices, good or bad.
xo
Of course they can ask about smoking...I wonder if they ask about alcohol use ?
And it seems really unfair, that they don't give a person the opportunity to quit ?
But ...no ever promised fair
I do think its acceptible espically in a hospital to exclude smokers. as was said earlier most smokers smell. for some of us that is a problem. If i were sick and a nurse who smoked were assigned to me I would litterlay be vomiting because I cant take certain smells anymore. It also drives up health insurance for employers. no one can deny smoking does cause a great number of costly health problems.
instead of lying go for a job that does not care if she smokes. if she is willing to quit anyway and its preventing a job maybe she needs to figure out what she wants more a job or a pack of smokes.
anyway i do wish her luck it sucks to be unemployeed
One place I worked ..a very professional environment ...tried to fire a young woman, when they found out her second job was as an Exotic Dancer.....went to Court.
Judge ruled, on her off hours, what she did was her business
Sorry bookmaven
Now, can Employers keep from hiring you because of it? Why the hell is it even on an application? As long as you know you can't go out for cig breaks and are clear on that, it shouldn't be an issue. What's next, do you take Advil on a regular basis????
Yeah major discrimination!!
That really sucks.
Its not like shes carrying around a gun, or hurting anyone. Geesh, what has society come to.
What's next? Don't drive an electric car...sorry we can't use you.
Plenty to bitch about if one likes to be that way. Me I'd rather just pop a bitch mint in my mouth and breathe ten times.
