Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
Hi guys! This is my first post, new to this community. Just feel completely lost and unsure of what to do. Please let me know if you know of any resources or have any ideas for what my sister and I can do.
My mother is bipolar and my sister and I are both in college. I was abroad this past spring semester and it was also my sister's first year of school AKA both of my mom's daughters were far from her for the first time. She had been working as a live-in nurse taking care of a blind man with a brain tumor and he passed away in December. She began to take care of some children as her new job but then she had a manic episode in January. She lost her job and moved in with a man she had started dating around the same time of her manic episode. In May, she had another manic episode. Then about a month later, she had another. She accused the man she was living with of raping her and got sent to a women's sanctuary where she threatened another woman and got sent to the hospital again. One of her childhood friends took her into her home, buying food for her and not charging her anything.
I forgot to mention my mother is an undocumented Mexican immigrant so she can't legally work. She called me a few days ago trying to convince me to sell herbalife with her and notifying me that she had invested into Mary Kay products as well. She feels out of options for herself, as do I. My sister and I have considered sending her back to Mexico to be near her mother and sister, but medical resources are not as accesible in Mexico so we have been holding off. I am 21, but I can't apply for her greencard until I show I can financially support her which won't happen at least until I graduate a year from now. And after I do apply for her, she will have to return to Mexico for 10 years anyway.
This morning, my mom's friend just called to let me know she had to call the cops on my mom and that she was being taken to the psychiatric hospital again. My sister and I don't know what to do anymore. My mom has never had episodes so frequently until now and we want to help her but our patience is running low and my mom's health is also deteriorating (diabetes, high blood pressure, tendonitis in one foot, potential heart problems). Do I let my mom's social worker figure it out? Do I pick up another job to pay for her housing somewhere she can be alone? What does she need to get better?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Yours is a difficult situation. I wish I could help. Good luck and best wishes.
Welcome aboard. Vent freely. Vent often.
And Susie, yes she has been prescribed medication but I don't know if she takes it. I think that's the issue with her living alone. She has limited health insurance that covers her meds and some doctor appointments for the next year and after that she will go back to having only emergency medical.
Arfie, thanks! Venting does help
Once you are finished school and working to can look into helping her more however I would make sure that she is compliant with meds and any treatment that she is prescribed first
I wish I knew more to help... Big hug and a blessing....xo
