Can you maybe not try to do something as "complicated" as reading right now till you're done with the percocet? Maybe try mindless puzzle books.....word finds.....crossword puzzles.....stuff like that to help pass the time?

Maybe even a Rubik's cube! Haha!

What doseage are you on? Can you cut the pill in half or quarters?

I am seeing my pdoc today (regular appointment time).

I was in a very bad place last year after having knee surgery. I was on 15 mgs hydrocodone for 6 weeks along with some other drugs when the hydrocodone didn't cut it.
I went into a depressive state for a while I think due to the narcotics but I had to have them for the pain.

Also as you may know I had three types of narcotics in a 24 hour period almost 3 weeks ago. I had dilaudid and Percocet and hydrocodone. This messed me up really bad. I was even entertaining the idea of hospitalization it was so bad.

I heard a speaker at a NAMI convention say that when she broke her arm she was afraid of how the narcotics would affect her also.

I realize that when we have surgery we have to have pain meds no ifs'. In certain other situations we need pain meds as well.

I just want you to know you are not alone in this. Narcotics can do a real number on me and my bipolar disorder.

I know I try to get off the pain meds just as soon as possible after surgery. I end up taking 800 mg of Iubprofin instead. It works for me.
Last time I had surgery I took my pain killer for 24 hours and then switched. I can tolerate a little extra pain but I can't tolerate to much of the buzzed feeling before feeling dysregulated.

Having just had a major surgery myself, I am also having a hard time keeping my head straight.

Taking pain meds seems to negate my other BP meds....my sleep has been disrupted, even though taking the pain meds , should knock me out.

When I talked with my Pdoc, he said being under anithesia (sp) often will disrupt your brain chemistry for several weeks.

If I remember correctly, you do not take BP meds , so , I would think that you will have to work extra hard at your coping skills to get through this .

Your situation sounds frustrating -- and apparently not good for your stability!!!

Hoping you get through this. When I had reconstruction surgery, pain meds was the big issue for me too. I needed them, but the Percocet was just too much, and gave me migraines and projectile vomiting. I went to Tramadol, which is a synthetic narcotic, which seemed better, and helped with the pain and I slept better too. You might try asking for that as an alternative. I got off all the meds in two weeks, because it was driving me nuts.

It seems like bipolar and surgery are not a good combo on this forum.

So sorry to hear that, but know that you are healing & you will get better this is just for a little bit.

I started with Lor Tabs and Toradol, but was allergic to the vicoden and ran out of the Toradol. So now he gave me Percocet and was only taking half a tab til I ran out of the Toradol, now I'm taking a full one.

Thanks I didn't know that anaesthesia could mess up my brain chemistry, your right I'm not on meds and it's taking all my skills to keep my head on straight.
