I've always known the views in my country on MIs are narrow and offensive. I've always known that MIs have an awful stigma here. Yet I've always hoped that somehow that could be changed, maybe starting with my school mates. I thought maybe being in the small percentage of our population in a higher learning institution- the best in the Caribbean, would make them more open-minded, more sympathetic, more understanding. Man, was I wrong. I was in psychology class just now, freaking PSYCHOLOGY and the lecturer asked what our perception of someone with a mental illness is. One girl responded homeless. As sad as her answer was her justification was even worse. Apparently the homeless people were mentally ill and chose to go live on the streets. I let that slide and class continued. Our lecturer then showed us a video about girls with eating disorders and during an intervention in the clip one girl broke down and told her friends how she really saw herself. I was in tears and about 70% of the class was laughing. I pray to God none of them ever go into the field of psychology because dear heavens, we're doomed if these are the people we'll have to talk to. I was so mad I almost walked out of the class, honest to goodness. Reactions like those just make me so damn angry. I feel like we're never going to get to the point where instead of comparing MIs to PIs people will just accept that they are both hard to live with,
