I am disabled due to my bipolar disorder. My mother has a duplex and she wants to leave me 50% of it, in her testament, I love that. but one of my sisters lives on the back , so we would have to pay half of the taxes each one of us. I don't know if I'm going to have money for all the expenses that we have to share. My sister has a very good job and makes a lot of money. My therapist suggested that my sister should be the one paying the taxes, not me, but my mother doesn't want it that way. I have a low income apartment, which I hate, (forgive me God), that I don't want to lose, just in case I can't pay for my mom's house. I pay for that apartment $139.00, plus all the other expenses. My mother pays for the duplex almost $6000.00 in taxes, but the house is paid off. Any suggestions? We have to go back to the attorney to sign the papers.
BUT have you checked into tax relief? They have that in my county. Since the duplex will be in both names, and you are on disability, can you apply for tax relief for your half? Worth asking. My mom gets tax relief and doesn't have to pay taxes on her house.
I probably could too but my daughter lives here with me and works and that would come into play with their financial guidelines, but in a duplex, that's two different living arrangements, correct?
If you are on SSDI and Medicare, this will not affect anything. If Medicaid, they will take whatever money they want.
The other option is renting our your half but the rent would have to cover utilities and taxes. Do the math and see how much it comes out to.
