Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
I was told by an acquantance yesterday that people who are depressed are really not counting their blessings. The person basically went from claiming depression wasn't real to saying PTSD was so much worse than bipolar. My initial response was to accept that and continue to try to explain my situation. She got aggressive and basically told me that I'll understand when I get robbed or raped as though she wished that happened to me for having the nerve to say I was currently depressed due to my bipolar disorder.
People like this make me want to shut down and never talk about my disorder to anybody but my therapist ever again. I got SO mad and SO defensive, I almost blocked communication from this person. I know that's on me, she's just ignorant and I shouldn't expect her not to be, but wow...
A huge problem with this is that it confirms what I think most people ACTUALLY think about bipolar but just won't say. Now in the back of my mind I'm going to equate anybody who doesn't know anything about bipolar to this idiotic person. And honestly, I'm probably spot on in doing so.
Hell is other people....

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Hope you can forgive the ignorance, Beni. I heard a rumor once that even smart and compassionate people have their points of callous ignorance to flaunt. Nobody gets to know it all.
I'm not always like this, I hate my brain :/ I was going to block communication from the person but I didn't. I am stronger than that. It's not even her fault, she was just expressing an opinion, even though it was an ignorant one.
Yea, I am still tempted to hate my own brain when it goes wonky on me, but I'm getting quicker to remember that hate is not the most helpful of emotions.
Healing hopes.
Its not a pissing match. Who cares what someone with PTSD thinks about BiPolar, neither of them are something that anyone would ever want to deal with if they had a choice. They are both equally horrible mental illnesses.
Don't let yourself get caught up in trying to measuring the worth of your illness, its a waste of energy.
Take care,
Kat
Thankfully I've yet to experience that kind of ignorance. But I agree it's best to walk away
Kisses*, ya I shouldn't let it bother me. I just wanted to vent and see if anybody had any advice on this.
People who have bipolar and have PTSD would have it worse! There are probably other combinations that are even worse than that.. Being raped and having nightmares about it or being in combat and having it traumatize you is obviously horrible! I can't imagine how hard that would make life. But that doesn't mean that my depression means nothing.
I'm never one to really even open up to people about it at all because I always have negative ineractions with people.
It's my own fault, I try to be open about being bipolar so that maybe people could understand more. I think it's turning out to be a stupid endeavor.
I have both.
They both suck.
Fuck whoever told you that. Bipolar disorder is a chemical imbalance.
PTSD is your brain being all "HEY YOU REMEMBER THIS? OH YA DON'T? LET ME TORTURE YOU WITH IT."
Bipolar disorder requires pills.
PTSD requires therapy. There are no pills to get rid of memories. You have to do therapy for PTSD and it gets better. You may never FULLY recover, but it is possible to nip that shit in the ass.
Again
I have both
They both suck
Fuck that person, they don't know.
*mic drop*
Can't stand those people.
*mic drop x2*
I think your aquaintance's judgemental behaviour may possibly be the rant of someone afraid of getting overwhelmed with their painful hidden wounds from trauma. I'm so sorry you got hurt in the process if that was it. That sucks. Some people's defences can be pretty strong.
To get over it I would recommend working out how you might go about forgiving her even if you don't forget how she is sometimes and maybe give her a wide berth unless she surprises you with an apology.
