I remember when I was a child I use to wonder why people were so terrified of dentists. Of course that is before I ever had a cavity yet. Still through my entire child hood I can't ever once remember being in so much pain. I took it like a champ. Granite I never did like the drills or was able to hold my mouth wide open. Dentists have always complained about my mouth not opening wide enough.
Well I realize that I'm partly to blame here. I haven't been to a dentist in around 3 years. But I couldn't put it off because there was a big hole in one of my teeth and it was starting to bother me. I wasn't sure if I lost a filling or if this was a giant cavity.
Well let me just say for two years I had a problem with self care and that included brushing teeth. Still I was lucky I only had two cavities.
But here's the horror story. My teeth are very sensitive apparently. While the dentist used "Novocaine?" on the tooth with the giant hole, she used nothing on the other tooth. This is the first time some one drilled into the center of my tooth and hurt me so bad that I jumped and had to fight the urge to punch them.
Now the tooth with the real bad cavity didn't hurt all though I still didn't enjoy that drill. Still all and all it was the most painful visit I've ever had.
But that's not the worse part yet. So they release me into the wild and my gums are still numb. They said I could eat so long as I was careful not to mess up the fillings. great because I was starving.
So I ate a waffle and other stuff and iced tea. I got in my car and started to drive home and all the sudden my gums started hurting. Well no big deal the novocane is just wearing off right? Well it keeps hurting worse and worse and now the pain is spreading not just from where she worked but to other teeth too.
I raced to the pharmacy hoping that the doctor had called in my prescription of ultram, which is a painkiller. It's really for my joints but I was hoping it might help with the pain in my mouth too. But at this rate I'm getting snappy with the pharmacists. I apologized and told them it wasn't them I'm just in a lot of pain. I walked out to my car I was about to call my doctor to complain when the pain was so bad I couldn't talk with out screaming or snapping at some one. I can't handle pain very well and I know it.
When I got home all I could do is curl up on my bed and cry and scream from pain. I was so scared. I wanted to call some one but really what could I say about it? I think it was from the Novocaine though. A bad interaction with all my other medications maybe? I don't know but I know it's the Novocaine as I could feel as it was wearing of that it was spreading out from where she injected it on the right side. It was only on my upper (jaw?) and it did spread upward into my cheeks.
The pain slowly slowly started to turn into a stinging but still hurt enough to make me cry.
I'm not just playing around here or being dramatic this pain was so bad I was thinking about how it felt much better going into labor. I was wishing I could choose that pain instead of this one.
The thing is I want to tell some one about it, but every time I complain to a doctor over these little drug reactions I have they don't believe me. They think it's in my head. Well I'd love to transfer what I'm suffering with to them because there is no way this is just in my head. I was literally immobilized by pain by the time I barely made it to the bed. I couldn't move for an hour. and luckily I passed out at some point. When I woke up the pain was finally gone luckily.
Now I'm terrified of the dentist. I'm seriously thinking about never going back to one for the rest of my life. And I can't even do much about it since my insurance is really shitty when it comes to dental. It's darn near impossible to find a dentist who will accept it. I was lucky that I have one in lancaster because my last dentist was an hour away in potsville.
I doubt my family doctor will listen either. They never believe me cause I always have rare reactions that they haven't heard of.
I'm still shaken over this.

I would suggest trying sedation dentistry the next time, unless you are just worried more drugs=more reaction. Still... a dentist specializing in sedation might could work with you to find the right anestetics that will be easier on you than the novacaine was.
I'm just not sure the insurance will cover it. It barely covers dental as it is. I had a hell of a time finding this one.
But sedation dentistry sounds wonderful.
Sorry you have similar reactions and no one took you seriously either. That is my major complaint with doctors and dentists in general. They act like if you are in more pain then what they think is normal it's all in your head, or even if it's not that every one should just deal with it.
I hope I can find one.
