My husband of two years is diagnosed Bipolar. Ive known him for years but just recently been married. Now that we are married of course I see him 24-7 and I cannot figure this disease out. He is medicated on Seroquel, he takes on 150 mg tablet at night. He is on no other meds except a low dose hypertension med. THis is the deal, my husband is also suffers from an impaired liver due to excessive drinking. Although his drinking has slowed down since we married he still drinks because he says that it helps cope with the symptoms of bipolar disease. I think this is an excuse but I love this man and try to be supportive the best way I can. I do not condone his drinking so he often hides it from me. So this is the problem, I cannot tell when hes been drinking and is drunk or whether his symptoms are stemming a bipolar episode or whether his symptoms are stemming from his liver disease. He appears fine and then all of a sudden he starts with hypersexuality, restlessness, forgetfullness, confusion, sleepiness, and then he completely falls into depression for a few days. Then all of a sudden he is fine. He keeps telling me his fine and to leave him alone. I am exhausted trying to figure out the culprit. SO my question is, are their distinct symptoms to Bipolar disease and how long do these episodes last. I usually notice the change when my husband becomes hypersexual that is usually the start of something not so good! How can I help him? He is a full time student and so far so good, he graduates next semester. He is a 41 year old man who has had a rough path with alcoholism that ultimately led him to prison for two years. Since we've been together he has done fairly well and I am very proud of his improvement but Im not sure how to deal with the symptoms of this disease. Please help!

if you find that helpful please reply on that thread so it gets bumped for newcomers.
It is hard to seperate out what is what if he is drinking and alcohol also causes mood swings. If he is drinking to deal with bipolar symptoms he is better getting his meds sorted (that seroquel dose is qite low).
Drinking can make bipolar worse and I'd not drink and take seroquel - not a good mix
These hypersexual/restlessness/confustion episodes that lead into further behaviors sound like the bipolar since as person with that disorder I have known life to be going along decently when symptoms such as the one above occur. I can also tell you that I curb my drinking somewhat, before it consumed it almost fully, when I was in a level state more. The drinking seriously increased during episodes. He sounds like he is not as relentless in his episodes that I once was...makes me think he is bipolar 2...meaning he doesn't experience high mania but rather hypomania episodes.
Have you ever talked to his doctor, with him present, about what type of bipolar he has? You need to know. Does he know or is one of those NOS bipolar dxs? Whatever the more educated about the disorder the better.
You do need some extra support and the family group will surely help.

Bipolar is a cyclical illness so he may have highs or lows for a period of time but there should be periods of stability in between... If he's drinking that could well be the reason for the depression due to being hungover and going through the alcohol withdrawal ...
If he's using alcohol to treat his bipolar then he's using the wrong medication and should see a psychiatrist to find a combo that works for him... Alcohol is a depressant and will never help with depression...only hurt
It seems that he needs treatment for addiction rummi and he has to want to get better... You can't do it for him
I wish you both well...x
Get a handle on your feelings and how to deal with his drinking problems .
Then take it one step at a time and then address his mental illness issues.
Problem drinking always needs to be addressed first, because until that issue is addressed, everything else becomes secondary
Good luck
