hi Jenn....you know John has Asperger's too, he too is a couch potato, however you know I put him into a homeless shelter because living with him was unsafe. It was So Hard to do this...and he was much younger than your son. He was able to get into a place with his own room, 3 meals a day at 565 per month, all utilities included. Since he went there, I've let go of the conservatorship over medical, financial, education and legal...again it is all in the process of getting him free of relying on me. Now he is with an agency which will help him get a job, he has case management, a therapist, med management, and is on a waiting list for an apartment...This is all through a program for 18-25 called YAS...young adult services....google that for your state. September will be two years we've been down this road....since we have no one but each other and since I had cancer in 2012 I've made it my goal to make sure John had every service I could find for him in place incase anything happened to me. And I'm facing that now...will find out Monday if cancer is in my remaining kidney. So it is doable, and at the same time Not Easy....like I wrote, the first step was getting him into a homeless shelter because the state of CT only gives housing to homeless or DCF kids under 25...so you could start by checking out what services your state dept. of human services, young adult services who have disabilities...If you want your son to get a job, he can go to bureau of rehabilitation, we have in CT Autism Speaks, you can look at their website, they help parents and baby to adults with autism...there is help out there. You also might want to get into a group of parents with kids that have disabilities...they are a great resource. I got a lot of help from the school system, and a host of other people, however I was the one who had to seek out what I was told I'd find help....once you start the process does become easier.....and if your son blows up, as John did, I feared for my own safety, and the whole house was like walking on egg shells...waiting for the next explosion of anger....if you want a part time job, I can tell you most retail stores will start looking for help now until past Christmas....you'd be able to work probably 20hrs per week, or if you have a car, you could also get a job helping senior citizens stay in their home, driving to dr apts, grocery shop and light cleaning...that is usually a 2hr shift....and more times than not, you can choose the days/time frame you want to work...I love doing that job....and that is a high demand job due to the need for help....hope what I posted will give you some ideas and a direction to move towards for your son and for you!!! It's not called Aspbergers anymore, it's Autism Spectrum since there's such a variation of behaviors among those diagnosed. My autistic son lives with me. He's 35 now and has gone blind from retinitis pigmentosa (there is no treatment/cure) which is fairly common among autistics. Fortunatley he is good humored and affectionate and we do ok. He receives funds from my Social Security account and SSI and I encourage anyone short of funds to check out those benefits. It's heart-breaking to hear about the decisions that have to be made in dealing with this. I have no judgments to make.

Truly I feel the same way. In certain aspects I can rely on my family, but I know only God will pull through every time emotionally for me. Not pushing religion here, just saying. We have to be able to rely on ourselves at least
