Actually, I thought this law had been in effect for awhile, since Clinton. Maybe, its just in Texas, I 'm not sure. I just know if you have mental illness or violent crime history you can't get a handgun.

I can understand not allowing ppl with a history of violence but so many ppl with mental health issues are NOT any kind of danger and never will be! So many "sane" ppl are crazies undiagnosed!

I think by next year they said that they will come to your house directly and take your guns from you.. isn't that some shit...

It's not new. There are lots of things a mentally ill person cannot do. I wanted to take flying lessons, then found out I could never get a pilot's license. That bites.

Ummm...that regulation is for licensed dealers. If a person wants a gun they can buy from a private party with no questions or refusals. (many "private paties" turn out to be licensed dealers trying to maximize their cash flow, which is the American way!)
Remember that these regulations are brought to you by the same government responsible for winning the war on drugs and securing our borders!

This law has been in place for a while. I have heard that they were toughening it as a result of the Virginia Tech shootings.

Actually, I dont believe you would be excepted into the military with a mental illness. That doesnt mean people dont suffer mental illness once in the military but then I guess it doesnt matter. Hugs

I believe this is already the law in my state. This will be no obstruction to procuring one, if necessary.

It is bullshit. A stereotype that mentally ill people are all violent.

I had to sign paperwork before my first hospitalization stating that I cannot obtain a FOID (firearm owners ID) card because I was going as an inpatient for mental illness. Apparently it has been a law in IL for awhile. Curiously enough, it does not apply to black powder muzzle loaded rifles. VERY logical I thought.

LOL Like a little bill would stop anyone in the US from having a gun. I guess they believe in the tooth faerie too.

I think this has been in effect for a while. I remember years ago asking a cop what kind of things would prevent a person from owning a gun and among things like habitual drinking and drug use, and he also mention history of mental illnes. I mean to me that makes logical sense, why anyone would give someone with a history of mental illness a firearm is beyond me. Even if you are stable there is always the possibility of something triggering your psycological issues and bringing them to surface.

Just recently I've been trying to reenlist in the Marine Corps. Chances aren they will not be taking me back due to my bipolar history. As much as it sucks, I can't really blame them. From a realistic perspective I would be a huge liability to the military and to my comrades who are depending on me.
