Thursday 9-20, we went into hospital day surgery for a "short procedure" to remove some pre-cancerous lesions. Almost 3 hours later, the doctor left the operating room to talk to me. He had to take a large area and send it off to pathology and wanted to take out all of her lymph nodes in her right groin. We had agreed to this possibility prior to surgery, but he needed to talk to me anyway.
The biopsy was very close to the urethra, but he didn't want to take all of it because she would have to have an ostemy(a bag to collect urine outside the body). He said that we could use radiation to that area if the surgical margins were closer than 8mm.
After looking at the nodes on the right side, one of those nodes was positive for metastatic cancer. In that case, they automatically take all of the nodes on the other side and send those of to be studied. She was in surgery for 6 hours. We won't know for about a week whether or not those nodes had cancer also. We will find out if she needs chemo at that time also. At this time we know she will need radiation to her right groin.
For those that know me, I treat cancer patients with radiation everyday. We got to come home from the hospital today, with 2 drains coming from her abdomen that I have to empty every 2-3 hours.
She has congestive heart failure and will have swelling in her legs after the radiation, even though she already wears prescription hose to control the swelling from her CHF. She has already fought and won a battle against Hep C and now this.
I have cried a river of tears these last few days, but really lost it when her nurse wheeled her out of the hospital and we got her into the car. I looked at the nurse and spoke the words "my mother has cancer" for the first time.
She is a fighter but I am scared. I believe in God, but I am so angry right now. She is only 54 years old. This just sucks...how much more does she have to go through???
I'm sorry this was so long, I just needed to get it out. I won't even be allowed to treat her at the cancer center. Although I understand the reasons why, I feel so helpless. We have 4-6 weeks of healing before we can even start on the radiation.
I feel like I know too much and can do nothing. I am just treading water. I have called my doc and got approval to use my PRN valium for the next few days.

I only say this bcuz u mentioned it, remember the Bible says anger towards God and Jesus is totally understood in times like this. The anger you are feeling is a very healthy feeling.

I have been through similar situations myself. I just accepted it & did what I needed to do to help/support the other person, even if at times I didn't feel like it I kept on going. I like trying to live by the Buddhist philosophies, which have been a great help to me.

Just try to stay tough even when things look bleak. Some people do go into remission for years and years.
I am getting spiritual, theraputic and medical support during this time. The valium is helping, but I am having a hard time sleeping, so we will give it a few days. My mom is recovering very well, even surprising the doctor. I will make sure to update everyone as soon as we know more.
