My father rarely raised his voice to us, and never his hand. I'd see families out in the world, parents yelling and slapping. A raised eyebrow from my father was enough.

I was raised as a baptist in the south and was treated badly by my church. I'll never trust organized religion again.
That said, I think religion is the most personal thing in life. I do not think that we should have to confess in front of others. We either have true and good hearts or not.
Also, I've found that those who talk the biggest talk about their faith, generally have the most skeletons in their closet. Maybe it is just that my best roll models were quiet people, laugh, dour Swedes!
