Med Alert Notice?

For years I have read and been told I need to make sure I have a Med alert bracelet or necklace that warns of my disorder in case of emergency. I don't know why I have put it off but with the constant changes in my meds I know I should have something.

A wallet card with my condition - meds - allergies - treatments would make my wallet 3 inches thick!

I have an I.C.E. contact on my cell phone and the first listing is for the VA my primary caregiver but that is only if they look before giving me things like depakote and gabapenitene which I am allergic to

Any Ideas on how to let emergency personal know right away of my condition and needs. How have you done it?

for years i have had a med-alert bracelet on my right wrist-besides bipolar i have an artifical heart valve with all of those complications-you would be surprised how much stuff they can get on a med bracelet!

I heard of someone getting 'do not resuscitate' tattooed across their heart in like a retirement home?

CVS has a Medical USB Data Card that looks interesting. It stores all your medical data and contact information to carry in your wallet. But then you might have to wear a bracelet that says "look in my wallet" LOL. I thought about getting it but never did.

In my opinion, when one's unable to communicate information, medic alert is the best option. Once telephoned (at least this is the case in South Africa), the company gives out to authorised medical personnel all ones details, including medications, allergies, next-of-kin, donor registration, if applicable, and even whether one has a "living will", etc, etc...

However, be careful to order the stainless steel version. Not only is it the cheapest but it's unlikely to be stolen, as is a cell (mobile) phone, wallet or other valuables.

Loving jewellery, I thoughtlessly bought a gold medic alert bracelet.

I'm afraid I don't understand the ICE and DH.

However, in South Africa, we are registered by a number, irrespective of what is physically branded on the bracelet or neck chain emblem, in order that one may constantly update one's information as medications and allergies are added or changed.

So, although the physically-branded information is helpful in immediate life-threatening medical care, on admission to a medical facility, the Medic Alert company is phoned with the reference (membership number) and all the updated information may be obtained.

In an emergency, when one may be unable to communicate, one may also be incapacitated by accident or otherwise, I believe that one shouldn't assume that a cell (mobile) phone or wallet will be on hand. It may even be "removed" by some good-hearted samaritan...(lol)

However, unless one's arm or neck is amputated, it's likely that a 'worthless' steel chained bracelet or necklace will remain intact. My goodness! How morbid...

For anyone interested, I've just checked the internet to find that
the MedicAlert Foundation, is a non-profit company founded in 1956 and headquartered in Turlock, California, maintains a database of members' medical information that is made available to medical authorities in the event of an emergency.

Members supply critical medical data to the organization and receive a distinctive metal bracelet or necklace tag which is worn at all times. It can be used by law enforcement or emergency medical personnel to access their medical history and special medical needs.

The biggest thing I run into is the constantly well every year or two changes in my cocktail. Keeping that info up to date is hard to do on bracelets. I like the USB thing but first responders do not have laptops on hand when giving you that first shot that counteracts one of your meds.

Maybe we need to have a chip like my dog and they can scan it on scene lol (not really that funny how close to happining that may be)
