Maybe the Dumbest Question Ever

Figure I'll get slammed for this..oh, well. Probably not any worse than what I say to myself.
Have you ever felt you could probably benefit from going into the hospital....but don't because you figure you won't be able to smoke and can't stand the thought of the added stress?

Well, if you are heavily addicted to nicotene, that's not really a dumb question. But couldn't you use a patch or nicotene gum?

Also, I've read somewhere that there was a high level of smoking amongst schizophrenics, that they found it grounding. So maybe if it medicates you somehow, I can see it.

But there are alternatives, so it shouldn't preclude hospitalization when you need it.

BTW I think all the anti-smoking judgmental hysteria is a little over the top in our culture. Everybody's known that it causes cancer for years, I don't know why everyone suddenly got all obsessed about it.

It's not like alcohol doesn't ruin people's lives.

yeah, everyone should be anti-alcohol... that's the stuff that REALLY ruins lives. sure of course if a loved one dies bc of cancer and it's from smoking-that's nothing good to celebrate ...but someone who smokes cigarettes doesn't act like a total selfish asshole their whole time with it as a result of choosing to smoke.

I think it's dumb to make people give up smoking when in a psych ward- there's a time & place but that ain't it x

jancam- I agree with you about the stress involved in being in a psych ward. Can you manage without being admitted? What do you think would be beneficial about a hospital stay?

Oh yeah, I've made the conscious decision to not go inpatient because of the freedom I'd lose, the added stress of a roommate, bed checks, med schedules, et al. I don't smoke, but the smoking schedule I've seen when I have been inpatient is never enough for the patients that do smoke.

Not a stupid question at all. I think any of us that have been inpatient, and many that haven't, can relate!

i guess it's different when you have an absent father because of it, who dies a year after you find him... or are abused by men who don't control their drinking... just kind fucking changes the way you feel about it all a little... so yeah, MODERATION! cheers!

I can see it might deter me... I smoke as well and at least here you can go outside to smoke.. There is an area.. I think involuntary patients can go out on smoke breaks with staff members...x

they gave us these nicotine tube things. They weren't the same as smoking but they did help.

Every hospital is different though.

I just gave the longest dumb answer and cancelled it.

I'm too depressed. Mood stabilizers are out for varied reasons.
I'm on a lot of not psyche meds. I think I need an AD..but am very fearful of becoming too manic too fast.

Not a dumb question at all. Yes, I think about I can't smoke. And I don't want to be away from my husband and dog - my home. All would be added stress.

It's pretty much the same things that make me not want to go to jail.
