I was on Lithium many years ago and it didn't help me to sleep.... Anti psychotics have helped me with this such as Seroquel and I'm also on a Benzo, Restoril..

Lithium mainly is for the mania. It is a mood stabilizer and for some of us works on depression. It also sometimes is used on people with depressive disorders to augment their antidepressants. It is a multiple use drug. Even in its old age it is found to be the most effective drug for the controlling of episodes. as with all meds though it does not work for everyone.

It should slow your mind and if that is what is keeping you awake you will probably have a peaceful night with in 3 weeks of starting it. For me it was about one week to feel a difference in my depression. work closely with your pdoc on this.

I've used lithium for a long time. It got rid of the mania but I still used anti-psychotics and tranquilizers to sleep.

I have been taking lithium for almost 2 years now and it is a great drug. It took a few months for me to see the full effect. It brought me down from my manic state and it was a great feeling, I literaly felt like i was brought down from the clouds. lol. I take saphris to help me sleep and to help control mania as well. Good luck to you and wait it out and see if lithium is the right one for you.
