Hi, I'm new to the bipolar discussion and have a serious concern. I've been reading posts and doing research on various drugs and am dreading seeing a psychiatrist now (which is almost devastating since I was hoping medication would bring some relief.) My main concerns are this: If it turns out I'm not bipolar and am given a whole battery of drugs, will they do irreversible damage? And if I am, am I doomed to tremors, diarrhea, weight gain, hair loss, itching, and on and on? I read a lot of success stories, but the majority of the side effect stories make living on the street seem like a viable option.
is there a drug with minimal side effects, especially if it isn't really needed?

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

Like taking any med if it causes weight gain change your diet it will be more difficult to loose weight but its not impossible and if the weight gain is high change it for a weight neutral med. If your hair does begin to thin change it to a med that doesn't make it fall out, you don't have to suffer just because you have a long term illness so try not to worry and see how your evaluation goes first.
Due to the distressing nature of most of the content here, alot of members avoid the crisis centre.
But to answer youur question - most members consider the side effects (which vary from person to person) are worth it compared to unmedicated bipolar. If you are not experiencing major problems in your life then it will quite possibly be that you are not in fact bipolar.
But first you need the diagnosis. If you don't think it fits get the psychiatrist to explain their reasoning. If still not convinced get a second opinion.
I've been on lithium - it's not a walk in the path but it's better than having bipolar episodes.
