I have been on Lithium for about a half a year and prior to this past month, knock on wood it has treated me VERY well. Prior to this I was on Depakote and had a lot of very negative side effects on that (severe hair loss and weight gain:-().
This past month I had a cold/viral thing and then have just generally felt under the weather. My doctor thought my thyroid/being on Lithium might be causing my feelings of malaise thus we decided to test my levels (which by the way have always come back normal). The thyroid level did come back as abnormal.
I'm curious if anyone has suffered from their thyroid being impacted by taking lithium and how they felt physically. What were the symptoms and how did you address this? I have an appointment with my p-doc on Wednesday (unfortunately my regular p-doc is on maternity leave so this is the covering one) but hopefully I/we'll figure out soon what is going on so I can start feeling well again and get back to life!

I've been on high dose prednisone for pneumonia, and now I am slowly weaning. But lots of symptoms I don't like having, plus overeating has put at least 10 lbs on me. The food is "loud" as the GLP-1 users refer to it.Also pressured speech. Which comes out in my posts. Sorry I posted so much. I just need an outlet for my agitated and irritable brain. In 2010, when I was trying Lithium again, I felt under the weather and then contracted a auto immune disorder called Lichen Sclerosus. The doc that diagnosed that said it was connected to Hypothyroid. I was tested and it was Hypothyroid. I then got off the Lithium immediately and got on some synthyroid for about 2 months. I was retested and the hypothyroid had left!! I officially will never try Lithium again.
In 2006 I was on Lithium the first time around, went toxic and at the same time developed an auto-immune disorder called Sarcodosis.
I think it brought out these auto immune disorders in me and they were very serious. Not worth seeing my health decay over a mood stabilizer.
The Sarcoidosis has left me with a Vit D intoxication where I cannot tolerate direct sunlight. My body doesn't process D from the sun correctly..it actually over produces and causes severe heat stroke type symptoms with cardiac arrhythmias..it feels like you can't cool off period and lasts for hours. I blame Lithium...just too much of a coincidence.
I may have had problems before I took Lithium but it did my Thyroid in which is a permanent side effect.
Lithium never worked for me and I thought this was a particularly high price to be paid for taking a psych med.
It made me reconfigure the whole "Big Pharma" aspect to Bipolar Disorder and I began saying no....quite a bit.
I can absolutely appreciate that life is challenging enough as is and to add medical complications on top of it is just too much sometimes.
I am hoping my medical team and I can figure out what the hell is going on so I can move on with my life and I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post.
