Kind of OT - Question about therapist's comment

Backstory - My husband complemented me last week, saying I looked young when he told me that the people that were at the concert we went to averaged around our age or 10ish years older. I had said that I saw many people that looked a lot older than 10 years older than us. Anyway, he said I looked young.


Therapy appointment - I told my therapist about this and said that it made me feel good. She then asked me how old I was, nearly spit out her water laughing, and then said yes I look young. Should my therapist have known my age and not have been shocked by it? I have been seeing her for at least a year now. I thought it was weird that she was so surprised even if she thought I looked young.

I've been with my therapist for over three years and just last week she asked me to remind her how old I am. So that part doesn't seem too weird to me. Her response doesn't seem super professional to me, personally, though? Regardless, if it bothered you, you should mention it to her so that y'all can talk through it :)

It didn't bother me per se, but I was really surprised. She is actually a really good fit for me and we have been finding skills that work together. I actually found the reaction flattering though.

I mean, she should know how old you are yes, but you can't expect her to remember every detail about you. Not a big deal in my opinion.

She probably would have had to look back in your chart...... She probably sees a lot of people and doesn't have ages memorized..... It sure feels good to look and feel young though.... You Go Girl!!.....xo

Lord knows we don't need to find things to worry about...I know I can't remember everyone I deal with's age.....take the compliment and run with it!

Thanks. I didn't know if it was normal for a therapist not to know my age. She probably knows my kids ages better than mine now that I think of it since we talk about milestones and IEPs and all sorts of other stuff. It's never come up. My other providers do know it, but they actually have my EMR in front of them. Plus, they always ask your birthdate before they do anything as one means of verification. Anyways, thank you. I don't know why I didn't think of the whole not having the EMR up during the visit which is why she doesn't know the age. :)
