Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

I've come up with a theory. Although bp runs in my family, I became this way because of years and years of negative treatment from othes. All through school I was picked on horrible on a daily basis. At home I was criticized for many things. I got worse at home when my mom developed bp and she started drinkin heavly and died of it around the age I am now. Then I get out into the world and I judged and criticized. Many of these things I was accused of weren't true. for awhile I developed ocd but I was able to work throught that.g
I'm so tired of being judged and made to feel like crap. I have littl to no self esteem. I'm so afraid people won't like me if I make a mistake.
I'm sure this is a result of the negative treatment I had recieved most of my life.

Unfortunately, BiPolar Disorder is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Is a Mental Illness, a medical condition and cannot be caused by environmental factors. If you've been diagnosed BiPolar, you need to either accept it and start learning how to live with it and your daily life, or get a 2nd opinion if you don't think that the Diagnosis is correct.
Talk to your Pdoc or Therapist about your early struggles, it helps to work through them and understand truly that the things that happened in your life were not your fault nor under your control. It helps to journal and write all the negative stuff down, getting it out of your head, so you don't think about it constantly. The goal is to try and put the past in the past and start a new beginning, a future where you accept yourself for who you are.
Take care.
"Why?" I asked. "At the very least, PTSD is an experience of extreme swings."
Besides, I picked up some very effective tools from that BP therapy and do not want to be ashamed of where I learned them.
In short, I believe agree with you, Jen. There is more than one single factor at play here.
I had a pretty idyllic childhood - but there was bipolar / schizophrenia in the family on both sides. The bipolar appeared when II left home at about 19 and went to university.
