bipolar disorder is genetically linked. When I get depressed for long periods of time, I don't want to be here anymore. Its hard to function with depression. When I get depressed I get tired of saying I'm ok, when I'm not and hiding my feelings from everyone.

Yes, it is a chemical imbalance in the chemical serotonin in the brain. There is a genetic link - you may see higher instances in families who have high degrees of depression and other mood disorders. Individuals have varying expressions of depression, periods of stability, and many times followed by periods of mania, or a heightened emotional state. This can be positive as in euphoria, or not so positive as in irritability and quick to anger, with racing thoughts, impulsivity, and other symptoms. Typically, bipolar and other mood disorders are diagnosed by a licensed psychiatrist, but general practitioners and therapists are usually educated as to the symptoms. If you have been formally diagnosed by a psychiatrist, you should be able to have all your questions answered by them, but there are also many other resources available. Many great books, support groups, and online groups like this one are extremely helpful. Don't hesitate to refer to the crisis center on this site through the bipolar group as it is excellent, or just the general board. Day or night, there is usually someone here to help or just to talk to.

Bipolar is a Gentic ride on the rollercoster ride to hell and back, with one stipulation, theres no one there to flip the switch,no man gurading his station to let you on or off, your just on,going up and down, around the curves, its non-stop, never ending, round and round you go, up and down, winding around the curves,till you get so sick and tired of it,and then you begin to think, Hey there is a way off, suicide !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Depression is a disease! You have to have medication to bring you out of the fog. What ever problems you have will still be there but you will be able to deal with them.
