Grenadine, are you taking anything medicinal above and beyond your normal psychiatric stuff? I am asking this because a couple of months ago I had abdomobal surgery and I was given Endone, both in the hospital and when I got home. Endone is very powerful and is an Opiate derivative.

Unfortunately my foolish and useless surgeon didn't check drug interactions with all my psych drugs (which I listed clearly and in detail on the check-in forms). I ended unded up with halleucinagenic (excuse spelling) nightmares much like yours. I had to try and sit up all night and stay away (which is pretty hard when you take 600mg Seroquel every night plus Valium if needed LOL). It was horrific - I think it really even crossed over to psychosis.

I rang the surgeon the next day, got no joy and rang my psychiatrist, who is very clever about drug interactions and he said (paraphrasing) that it's a no-brainer that my meds would interact with Endone. He told me I wasn't even allowed to use anything with Codeine in it as it's also Opiate -related. I stopped, used painkillers which didn't really help with the slashes across my guts, but it was better than the psychosis.

Maybe you could check are there any drug interactions happening?

This may not help, but I have had terrifying nightmares all my life, since I was little....Still remember some of them. Then, my life through the years has been MUCH worse and terrifying than dreams. So, I just look at them as some really bad movies, and know when I wake up, that they are just my mind letting off steam, releasing stress. Sleep is a very precious commodity in our group. Try nightlites, lavendar sachets, chamomile tea, read a boring book until the meds hit. The nightmares for me, are actually "inspirational." My BF says I could write a whole catolog of sci-fi stories!

Thank you all very much for your replies. I did have another nightmare last night but it wasn't as scary. I tried to think of nice thinks and be in a calm place before falling asleep. I will definitely tell my pdoc about this. All of your suggestions were great and will hopefully be helpful.

Have you had help for this i.e. CBT or anything? If not I suggest you get some kind of therapy like CBT because it will help a lot. Also meditating will help you relax a lot more. I used to get nightmares every night about what I witnessed in the Army, but one day I'd had enough. I thought I either let them rule me & throw in the towel or I get help, so I got help in the form of CBT. I still get them at times but not to the degree I used to so it's something to be grateful about. It will get easier once you find your own way of coping with them.

I am not BP my husband is but I have my share of issue i am PTSD, I have depression, anxiety, Personality disorder ect ect. I was raped when i was 18 and when i was 7 watch a horrible rape and murder of a young girl I have been exposed to many violent things and sleep is not my friend I hate to sleep I will stay up sometime 3 to 4 nights in a row if I let the fear over take me. I now have it under control for the most part. I calm myself before bed pray and think of wonderful thought things that have made me happy and dreams that will come all positive and if they do come for me I will find my self waking up praying or going over word of a favorite song. I have even got mad sat up in bed and said that is enough get out of my head damit and dont come back I need to sleep and it stops. I get these nightmares from my PTSD my husband get them also and he hates to sleep at times also we go to bed talk about our dreams cuddle up and that helps us. I used to have a PSD dog and because I wasnt aware of the law and rent I lost him 6 months ago I just took a month of learning and found our PSD dogs do not have to be profesional trained and will react on our emotions and moods they can detect episodes and are taight to reacte prevent comfort and helpo. i also learned people with any mental illness are protected under the ADA and have a rught to a PSD dog and have a right to have them in rental housing as well as in publc. I fought and I rent and my PSD dog is coming back this week. i am going to have to work with him because hes been gone 6 months and I got worse but when I had nightmares he would crawl on the bed with me and always made me feel safe. I will leave a link to a sight that tells about these dogs. My dog is a Rottie so to get him approved I trained him all I needed was a doctors note saying I need him for my mental illness and character refrenses for the dog and be a responsable owned and they can not by law refuse accomidation under fair housing act or under ADA many do not know these laws so sorry I went on and on and for bad spell I also have TBA and cant spell at all so maybe you can look into a dog there are many in rescues that can be trained by you its all about your dog and you being binded so they know your emotions and know when and what to do. Look at this siye this is my goal to start up a non profit in my ara get these Rottie and other dogs out of rescues and punds and train them they need you as much as you need you they did research and a study and 80 % had improved and almost no episodes and had decrease in medication use. I have really bad nightmares and complex dreams too - so very much so that I'm sometimes too scared to go to sleep - there is one positive thought though - at least you always wake up from nightmares.

I hope you had a good nights rest and no night mares. I also know for me I saw a therapist and she did this image therapy and it really worked well. Good luck and God Bless
