I am afraid of the dark. It is necessary for me to have lights, in the hallway. My partner can't sleep in a room that isn't dark. Makes things a challenge.
It is the feeling of suffocation that bothers me. Wouldn't be surprised if I am also, afraid of death. If it goes completely dark I panic. Can't run out to find light, fast enough.
Most of the time it is good enough to have the hall light on.When I am going through a tough time, I have to turn the bedroom light on.
Know that my solutions, probably won't work for you. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.
Being terrified of going to sleep is probably one of the worst things for a person with a bipolar disorder to deal with.
For me I go south, pretty quickly when my sleep cycle is messed with.
Good luck and I hope you can have a good night, sleep.
Will be thinking of you.
This is what I tell my kids: "Think of good things and dream about them!"

I want to be hypomanic again. I'm crazy.
