Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
I'll be at work, and someone will mention a conversation involving me, and I would swear that I was not part of it. It's frightening. It seems to mostly be my short-term memory. I seem to remember events from years ago quite well. Age? Meds? Whatever it is, I absolutely hate it.
I can understand how you feel. I don't know what the answer is, though, unfortunately.
I guess when your memory is working well, you just can't fathom what memory loss is like. Forgetting a little, sure....but when they said a side effect of treatment was short term memory loss....I guess I just couldn't imagine forgetting most things.
I use a planner to remind me of things and to help me have documentation of the past. It helps to jog my memory.
Good luck. This is not fun.
People say things to me in Hugs and I have no idea what they're referencing, even if it's only been a matter of minutes. I have to go back and see what I said to them, to jog my memory.
I save all Emails and IMs and when I look at some of the older ones, it's completely news to me what was being said.
It took me quite a while to learn that if I want to remember anything, I have to write it down. And not just a quick 'memo' to myself, either. I have to make it very detailed or I won't understand what it means, later.
My damn brain FEELS like it's 'on record', just as it always used to be, while things are taking place. Unfortunately, such is not the case.
I really don't like being this way!!! But at least I'm getting used to it.
From what I heard, the short term memory loss will be temporary???
In the meantime, try some coping skills that might help.
Like write down notes when you give your son his meds and keep it in the same place where you can easily remember to see it.... stuff lie that, in the meantime, don't fret, just concentrate on the treatments to get you better..... take care. xoxo
- My daughter got into a chorus group that has only accepted now 7 students. (I had no idea she was even trying out for it or that it existed)
- My step-nephew is not only 18 (not 13) but was hit by a car a few years ago and just got a huge settlement.
- I have been allowing my children to watch movies that at this moment, I don't think is age appropriate (Resident Evil, Paranormal Activity, not like porn or anything)
- I actually have allowed my children to say words that I normally wouldn't (crap, freakin', balls/nuts) and that they weren't lying and taking advantage of my memory loss.
- In the event of my death, I do not know a single person who could care for my son but my Mom....and what happens if she isn't around?
There's probably more....of course, I don't remember now. I write notes, keep a journal, and tell everything to my 2 best friends. At this point, there is a stack of papers next to my bed about 6 inches high. I'd get rid of the ones that I no longer need as reminders....if I knew which ones they were.
It's depressing to think that my own kids don't come to me to tell me things. Maybe they do though? I wish I knew.
1. My partner Jacob will remind me of a conversation we had earlier and I can't remember having them
2. in hugs people mention things I said and how helpful I was, and I have no idea what they are talking about
3. I also don't remember half the people in my friends list either.
4. Jacob said it will get better, but I forget that he says that and ask him over and over again
5. I lose track of when my Daughter's weekend is
6. I just can't remember a damn thing.
