Hey everyone...
Last night my sister told me she's going through some depression. Although she lives in a different state than me, I know I should have seen it coming. Her marriage is troubled and she lives in an isolated environment.
I've lived with bipolar for so long and I can never find someone to talk to among my friends. Everyone is so busy. And a lot of them have emotional disorders themselves. What I'm trying to say is.... I don't know the best way to talk to my sister. She came to me first, which I'm glad she did. She's seeing a psychologist who recommended medication. I know I can help but suddenly I feel scared. I know I need to show empathy and concern but how do I get to the core of mental illness with her?
Any advice will help.
Thank you!

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

I think in part she needs to learn to step by step to take her days and go through it as we all do. To own the illness and take responsibility for ourselves and yet to have someone to listen and vent to.
So, I think you can offer her your ear - I don't think you can offer her all the answers. I hope this doesn't sound harsh but she needs to own her feelings - and she can learn about herself by talking it out.
At least unless she has another modality like writing or doing art.
Just some thoughts.
Peace,
Mark
I think you can safely be involved in her treatment and get excited about that and motivate her to keep going.
