At home - put on my reading glasses and stick a big fat book in front of me.

Online - Click to a gaming site and play mahjong.

In the grocery - Humming and smiling my way through, lost in my own little world.

On the phone - Find the off button.

In traffic - Turn the music up a little louder.

I agree with the other poster. Take care of yourself FIRST. I try to fit the boards into a little of my life not a little of my life into the boards so that the boards are my be all end all. In other words make sure I have a life outside these boards so that when folks are going through a lot (which it seems like we are all doing right now) I can take a break and go on and live my life outside the boards.

Depends on who the person is - most people can be in the worst possible place and nope sorry does not effect me (see Sword told ya I am the cold hearted bitch of the south) but certain peoples moods do effect nme cuz I love and adore them

If people are being loud and tensed up around me I try and find my own space in the room.I breathe slow etc.
If they are sudden bursts then it's tough.Loud talking is a phobia for me.

Another option is to shout louder than them.Not really good.

If they talk loudly at you then reply quieter and slow the pace down

Its tough Tats, especially if you have to be around that person all day or interact with them. I just try to stay in my "own world" focusing on what makes me happy. I tend to stroll outside away from those around me who are not in such a great mood or lose myself in a book.

I think it just depends on who you are talking about. I know I feel differently if it is one of my kids as opposed to my hubs. It is easier to walk away from hubs or busy myself elsewhere. If it is one of my sons, it nags at me because I worry why they feel the way they do.

Learning that we are responsible for our own moods and emotions takes a long time. If someone else's mood is a trigger for you then you have to find what distractions work to help you, what words, thoughts, help you. Their mood is theirs and you do not own it, you only own yours.

For me it depends on the person.....if its one very very close to me, i cant, it affects me.

When someone (WF) tries to suck me into their bad mood I say" I don't know why your in a mood but I know I didn't cause it so don't take it out on me"
This works most of the time.

Make gratitude list, opposite action as you learn in DBT. Prepping yourself to be happy no matter what. Like Gina said you are responsible for your own happiness. Don't let others get you down

I discovered that I was quite the emotion sponge when it comes to my daughters. Baby #3, in particular, has also tried to control the family with her attitude. She had a couple of rough years after Baby #1 and Baby #2 left for college. I know she was unhappy (as was I) but she really took it out on us by being downright pissy to be around. I let it affect me alot.

One thing I tried to teach Baby #3 was that she is responsible for the bad vibes she's throwing out there to some extent. I also learned that it didn't have to be about me. She could have her bad mood all to herself -- I didn't need to try to share it with her.

As a beeper, we have to be diligent about regulating our exposure to triggers. Circle the wagons and take care of yourself first. :)

Unfortunately, there are times when some people just won't be helped and you need to just walk away and take care of yourself

My grandma told me once that being in a bad mood is our bodies way of venting poison. The problem is that it spews out all over someone else. I never could have a straight face when she would tell me that. She used to tell my dad to "stop spewing" all over, lol

Im not always sure myself. I feel others emotions, and lack of emotions, very strongly. Some I just can not help because I feel so much physical pain from their attitude. Others I try my best to give support. Sometime you do need to keep your distance no matter how cruel it feels.

But always ask this. How do I feel when I am in a bad mood, and no one reaches back for me?

Depends on what my mood is, for example when I'm in any stage of mania If my husband has a negative outlook it irritates me...Like man, you should be happy cuz I'm happy!!!!! If it's someone I don't really know on a close personal level than it doesn't effect me

Definatly take care of yourself more, those chemicals in our brains give us enough BS with out having to deal with other peoples

That last part kinda came out wrong, I guess I just have more sympathy for depresseed people that are bipolar cuz we don't bounce back as quick, I know how bad bp depression is & I guess to me it just seems like "normal"people's depression just isn't as bad because they are probably gonna get over it faster & depression isn't a regular occurance for them
