I make mistakes just like everyone else. My problem is that I beat myself up mercilessly for making them. Mostly its verbal beatings I inflict on myself but sometimes its physical. I feel anger and disappointment with myself for being so stupid. I can't seem to let it go, I dwell on the mistake long after I think I should. To add to the problem I can't forgive myself. My question is how can I learn to forgive myself? How do I accept a mistake and learn from it without beating myself up so much?

There are lots of things we can grieve for, and self-forgiveness is certainly one of them.
To me, depression is always attacking me - current horrible self-talk is "you are loser..." then ever mistake I've made pops up to prove it to myself, ugh..... the last few months, when "loser" pops up in my head, whether in a good place, bad place or out of the blue - I say to myself "NO, you make mistakes, NO, you are silly - not stupid." I also replace bad thoughts, with GOOD ones Ready!
You can't tell bad thougths to go away, thinking your mind will be blank - you have to Replace the thought - so I have them ready...
No, you make mistakes
The Serentity Prayer (helps me a lot when overwhelmed)
"I try to make new mistakes - growing pains.
The past made me the strong, kind woman I am - it is not my future.... etc, etc,
Any slogan, quip, prayer, quote - have a list of tools ready, when the onslaught starts, fight it! Call the sick thoughts, from a sick brain LIARS!
It is the number one symptom we all share - no matter how different, we all are way too hard on ourselves, and out of everyone in the world we should love and forgive, we deserve it the MOST!!!!! LOL sorry, this is what works for me - and I Work Hard! It's a climb, but the peace and comfort on the other side? So worth it! People like us, have more gratitude and pleasure when we grow and improve!
That link may help you learn about DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) and the skills that go along with it. DBT was formulated first for borderline personality disorder and it showed such great results that it is now offered to all kinds of people with mental disorders (not just borderline anymore). If you are in therapy you could ask about this class or perhaps find a facility that offers it. Otherwise you could look at this site and learn what you can and it will help you to a degree even without the classical DBT class.
First learn or become of aware of the mindfulness section. This is what the whole practice is based on. Try and learn those steps as best as you can. Pay attention to using "non judgmental stance". From where I sit I see you need to use non judgmental stance to get through your difficulties without further judging (and hurting) yourself. It takes awhile to get used to and you will never be fully non judgmental but your peace and contentment level will go up. You will feel much better.
It is okay to be kind to yourself even when you make mistakes big or small. You are worthy of your own unconditional love. :)
