I know I am not mentally or emotionally healthy. I wonder if that is a requirement for having a healthy loving relationship? I know I will always be mentally ill, I may get healthier with meds but it will still be marginal. So I wonder if I will ever have a healthy loving relationship. I see others with bipolar who have loving supportive mates (and yes I realize many do not) and I wonder - if it can happen for them why not me? Does having a mental illness really preclude finding a supportive mate? Can the mate be mentally healthy and still love and support one who is not? Does the partnership have to be between equals? Or are the odds better when both partners share the same disabilities? Is it easier to help each other if you both share the same illness - or do bipolar people need to be with healthy partners?

I am not currently in a relationship.
But my last ,long term (8 years) relationship was with a "normie"...he had a compassion and understanding of me ,that I think will be hard to refind in someone else.

The world is yours. Create in your life what you want. The trick is to find out if you are asleep dreaming you are awake. Then you can choose can find out that you have in life actually what you wanted whether you are awake enough to no the difference.

my parents have been married 45 years and my mother was bipolar before she ever met my dad. She has been very sick most of her life especially before doctors knew about Lithium, but my father just accepted she would be sick, sad and manic most the time. They have always seemed so happy and loving together, so I think it is possible for a bp to marry a nonbp and be healthy and happy. My brother is bp and married someone without a mental illness. They have been together 7 years and they seem to have a healthy and happy marriage too. I think it is just luck if you marry someone you can relate to in a healthy manner.

my long relationships have always been with non beepers and they have a lot of compassion and understanding. lt is possible to find love with someone and to be happy, l have dated beepers who were non medicated and refused to listen to their diagnosis so emotionally they were hard work but it was never their illness that ended us dating on my side, though in hindsight when they crashed they gave up on dating.

So yes it is possible to date a beeper but whether its easier/happier than dating a 'normie' is doubtful it always comes down to the two people and how they live their lives. Find a like minded soul with a loving heart regardless of anything else and you have a good foundation.

It's a good question. i don't know the answer. My relationships have all been long but none have lasted. They have all been with normies.

Same here.... heads or tails, depends on the mate, and how big of a heart he or she has for understanding and being a mental health partner for life.....
