Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

Hi all. I have been having very weird symptoms. Are dissociation and paranoia part of bipolar disorder? For months now, I was absolutely convinced my boyfriend whom I live with was gaslighting me. Turns out, he’s not. I’ve been severely dissociating and not remembering anything I’ve said or done. But I’m still not sure I trust the obvious fact that he’s telling me the truth.
Anyway, he’s going with me to my psychiatrist on May 15th. I’m not sure what to expect. I moved here nine months ago and have only seen her once. I’ve never had a significant other attend an appointment with me.
My bf says I’m cycling through extremes. But more than moods. Like whole identities. Religions. World views. My favorite color is even inconsistent.
I considered I might have dissociative Identity Disorder. But I am not aware of any alters. But I’m clearly “blacking out” and being very mean. With zero ability to recall any memory.
I tried to find out if it’s possible to have DID with no knowledge of alters. But, no luck.
I’m so scared about this upcoming appointment.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

A Psychiatrist normally concentrates on meds from my experiences, so i think maybe thats what you can expect. Normally therapy comes from a psychologist or counsellor or similar, a separate doctor --maybe that is where you could use some professional help framing your situation and nailing down some understanding of just where you are at?
Lastly dissacotiation is an affliction of mine and a number of others on the board, whether or not it's a bipolar thing, a co-morbidity, or possibly the result of meds I am not 100%. I combat mine pretty effectively by employing conscious breathing techniques when i find i have drifted to ground myself again. Here is an blog about them by expert Susan McConnell MA CHT http://www.selfleadership.org/blog/conscious-breathing-techniques/
Let me know what you think of any of that... just trying to help... best of luck
Its very good that you are letting your Boyfriend go to your Pdoc appt. so that he can clearly explain to her what's going on. You might ask him to right down the symptoms as they happen, date them and briefly not what your doing or what triggered them, kind of like a diary, as this will give your Pdoc the kind of information she needs to sort out what's going on.
It is possible to have Multiple Mental Illnesses concurrently, but your Pdoc will need to assess you, do additional testing and make those Diagnosis'. For the time being, try to do calming things, don't be all over the Internet trying to diagnosis yourself, all that will do is increase your Stress levels and the increased Stress can make your symptoms worse.
When you start trying to self-diagnose with Mental Illnesses as difficult and complex as Multiple Personalites/DID/Alters, etc. you will drive yourself nuts....so do yourself a very big help and don't. That's what you have a Pdoc for.
Pdocs (Psychiatrists) do the Diagnosing of the Disorders and Illnesses and then prescribing meds and treatments for those illnesses. Psychologist "Tdocs" and Therapists do Talk Therapy. Since your new to town you may not have had time to find your Therapist yet, but a major part of successfully treating BiPolar Disorder is Talk Therapy, so the sooner you get that going, the better it is.
So until you see your Pdoc, try to do calming things, use Relaxation and Breathing exercises, keeping stress levels down helps. It sounds like your BF is a good guy who has no problem taking care of you if you need it....let him. Your Pdoc will help you get this figured out and get your Treatment on the right track soon.
Take care,
Kat

Hope you can find some clarity and a solution.
Have a journey and write down what you feel, not how sick you think you are. Use that journey to acknowledge what things are you doing wrong, why doesn't matter that much as what are you steps to improve.
Good to see you have a partner that supports you. That's the best therapy you can get.
