Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

For those of you who remember me from several months ago, being BP 2 I was highly resistant to taking a mood stabilizer because of the shaky hands I got from lithium once, and the side effect profiles of most of the mood stabilizers.
Well, I finally took the plunge and my family doctor is putting me on Lamictal. Also, I remember all the advice about seeing a psychiatrist rather than a family doctor for this, so I also have a referral to a psychiatrist but there is a long wait in Canada. I will only be going if they keep up the phone and videoconferencing appointments due to Covid, because physically I cannot go in regularly and I also prefer confidentiality as I know too many people that work in that hospital.
Since I am very sensitive to medications, and to reduce the risk of the rash, I will be starting on a very low dose and going up very gradually. So, it may take awhile for it to have its effect. If my depression does not go away with it, we will probably substitute my Paxil for Prozac or Wellbutrin. Over 15 years ago, I tried Wellbutrin and it did not work, but I like the idea that it does not have sexual side effects so maybe I should try it again? I remember when I 1st tried Prozac about 25 years ago, I became hypomanic… Is it worth it to give things another try that did not work before? I know am very grateful for retrying baclofen. The 1st time I got severe chest pain, but in hindsight that was my own fault by going up too fast. So far it has been very helpful, but I know my side effects often get worse the longer I am on these medications because it seems like they build up in my system. My liver and kidneys seem fine according to blood results, but appear to be working a bit slow to me :-)

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Big squishy hug.....xo
You talk about starting a low dose of lamictal and that's one thing. Then you talk about substituting Paxil for Prozac or possibly starting Welbutrin instead. With most Pdocs it's kind of a general rule to not make too many med changes at once as it then becomes very hard to figure out which med is causing side effects if you're having any.
Starting Lamictal can have have side effects and it can take up to 6 weeks for it to regulate in your system.
Changing from Prozac to Paxil can cause side effects and it can take weeks for those to settle down.
Switching to Wellbutrin instead of Prozac or Paxil can also cause side effects and once again those can take weeks to settle down.
So if your family Dr. makes too many changes it can be a nightmare trying to figure out exactly which change is causing the problem....that's something to keep in mind.
I know you've said in past posts that you go on trips with your husband sometimes and are able to get out of the house. I also know you say that getting to a Pdocs office for some reason is almost impossible for you. All I can say is, regardless of your other medical issues, and there are a few of us around here that have many serious medical illnesses, it's important to see an actual Pdoc when talking about making all these changes to your BiPolar meds.
Your family Dr. just doesn't have the expertise or experience in dealing with Mental Health issues, so I hope that you can see a Pdoc soon. They can do telehealth visits pretty easily now days with all the Covid stuff going on.
Take care,
Kat
Now I am feeling so much better! The side effects of the new meds are very tolerable so far. No rash so far from Lamictal – fingers crossed :-)
