Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
Hello all, first of all let me say thanks in advance for any info received here, second I’d like to say this my first support group I’ve joined since my diagnosis a few years ago. My question is this I’ve been a few different drugs and finally found one I believe works Divalproex 1500 mg a day. My concern is that the feeling of numbness that I didn’t realize came along with it. My wife pointed it out to me. We are about to have a little boy but she believes I don’t care(or not as excited as she is), because my only wish is that he’s happy and healthy and I really just can’t wait to meet him when he is born. I’ve tried to listen to her when she talks about the pregnancy and the things that she is feeling inside her but I constantly drift of even thou I’m hearing her my mind is wondering. I have a lot going on in my life at this moment and as hard as I’m trying to focus on that I’m planning other things, like finances and the future, going back to school, etc.etc. Any words of wisdom?

I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...
Congratulations on your becoming a parent..... That's exciting!!
I would reassure your wife that you are really excited about your wee son and are there for her completely
Her hormones are in a different place right now that will effect her moods just as bipolar can effect yours
I would simply say that the meds have effected me however they're keeping me stable and I can hardly wait to meet our baby boy..... Big hug.......xo
One thing you might try to explain to your wife, unlike women who carry the baby, some men don't bond with their child until it is born. When you can hold it and touch and talk to it. Its a very different experience between a woman and a man. It doesn't mean your cold or unfeeling. Explain this to your wife so she can be at ease. Maybe read a nursery book to her belly at night so that the baby recognizes your voice.
but if this med is helping you, I'd give it a longer run and see if the numbness wears off.
Take care,
kat
