I am sick with a cold. I feel like crap.
I feel like a failure. I am having trouble with part of my new job. I am getting not so subtle hints from my boss that I "should be understanding this by now". I started on January 18th. I am doing well with 80% of this job. It is just this part of it that is getting to me. I don't know WTH I will do if I fail at this, too. I already feel like a huge failure as it is. I don't know what I'll do if I fail AGAIN

Apparently my brother didn't know my nephews were coming and he was livid. I came home to a...

Feelings aren't facts....yes we are challenged by situations and people.
Is it possible to ask for extra help with the difficult stuff?

If you're excelling at 80% of your new job after only a couple weeks, you should be proud of yourself. Give yourself permission to congratulate yourself and stop telling yourself you're a failure. That negative self-talk creeps into the nucleus of every cell in your body and does great damage.
Be direct with your boss about the areas you're still mastering. It's his/her job to support you in your position to be the best asset for the company you can be. I believe in you!!
I'm in a similar situation with my uncle who is now convinced that I do a poor job because I have short-term memory loss. Well, I may have memory loss b/c of the meds I'm on, but I still think I'm doing an awesome job. I may need to be coached every now and again, but I'm GETTING IT!! Just like you. Tell your boss you're a focused learner and like to get the details just right! Good luck with that! I hope he's a good listener.
I think that with any new job, a period of adjustment is necessary. A new role takes time to acclimate to, in terms of the work duties, as well as coping with new work-based relationships.
I think if you give it time, you should be okay.
