I had my first ECT yesterday. After all I'd heard about it before actually having it....i thought I'd wake up and not know where I was or why I was there. They told me that I'd wake up confused.
I remember going in, getting my IV placed....and waiting....and waiting....and then I started coughing (a lot). I finally admitted to my nurse that i was scared. That's when I remembered being wheeled into the room, the pdoc placing electrodes on my head, the oxygen mask being placed on me and then the smell of the oxygen changing to something else (not pleasant). Apparently I had the treatment already.
That's the only confusion there was....and as far as I know (so far), I haven't had any memory loss.
I will say this. I'm in a lot of pain. They warned me that I might have muscle aches and pains, mostly in my jaw. My jaw is fine, but my back, shoulders and neck are absolutely killing me.

I think the coughing had something to do with the anesthesia. I was perfectly fine before the treatment and I'm honestly scared to go back in tomorrow. My airways were very constricted (even if my oxygen levels were fine). I still can't take a full breath and coughing is excruciating. They just told me "not to smoke any cigarettes before treatment"....considering I can't smoke a cigarette even if I try..., I guess that's not a problem.
I am glad things went well.
Maybe warm showers or baths will help with the neck and back pain
