I used to go to a local bar and drink three beers per setting. After three, I cut myself off. I did not want a DUI or DWI. Anyhoo three beers was my limit.

I decided not to drink beer anymore. It is what it is.

Alcohol is a depressant. It doesn't mix well with mood disorders even without considering medication.

I don't know what the time frame is for avoiding mixing Klonopin and alcohol. It would depend on how much of each, the person's weight, metabolism, probably a bunch of other specific medical criteria - it seems to be one of those things that trying to find out could lead to a very unhappy accident.

I assume you are aware of the issues you can get with Depakote if you fall pregnant? I don't think it's now being prescribed in Europe for women of child bearing age.

ok, yeah my doctor said don't mix alcohol and Klonopin. yes I am aware of issues with pregnancy, but im not planning on getting pregnant anytime soon.

and yeah I guess i'll try not drinkingin social settings despite being the odd one out.

I occasionally have one drink at festive times like Christmas or a birthday but I don't like the feeling of meds and booze together...… Alcohol being a depressant never sits well with me

When I was on Depakote it severely lowered my alcohol tolerance. I was getting drunk off of like 2 glasses of wine for a while. I told my therapist at the time that I wasn't going to stop drinking because all of my friends just turned 21 so it was what we did every weekend. Basically I had to start over in learning how much alcohol that I could take. Im sorry that I cant be more help but basically I took it slow, made sure I ate a full meal, drank plenty of water, and just had to be aware of how things were affecting me. Being on a mood stabilizer shouldn't mean you have to miss out on things.

I have mixed benzodiazepines and alcohol before. But only like wine coolers, not liquor. And i do have an occasional drink but I always limit it to one. I’ve never had an issue, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a bad reaction yourself.

Effects of drinking alcohol while taking Depakote:

Alcohol can increase the central nervous system side effects of Depakote, such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. You may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment.

The Dangers of Mixing Alcohol and Klonopin are that both Klonopin and Alcohol are CNS (central nervous system) depressants. Serious side effects can include the slowing of the heart, slowing of the breathing rate, having difficulty breathing, passing out, and death.

Klonopin makes alcohol's effects stronger, so if you drink, it is unlikely that you will be able to drink as much as you have in the past.

There are very real and adequate reasons that your Pdoc tells you not to drink Alcohol when your taking Psych meds, including Benzo's, Anti-Depressants, Anti-Psychotics, Anti-Seizure, etc. They're not just trying to spoil your good time.

Do you know what happens when you "puke your guts out" and your half out of it/or passed out because of the combo of alcohol and klonopin....you aspirate that puke into your lungs and choke to death.

The risk you take drinking while on these meds is really not worth it. You can have a good time without having to have a drink.

I'd have to echo that. I nearly killed myself with alcohol while passed out on my back and being sick. That was when I was in my 20s and decades before a diagnosis. But for me the party almost ended then.

I think that I'd have to disagree with the statement "Being on a mood stabilizer shouldn't mean you have to miss out on things." I think actually it does. But it's your choice.

Ok you guys are right. I dont need alcohol to have fun. Besides it makes me feel weird. And i definitely dont wanna go to the ER or die.

And we'd definitely prefer that you stick around....
