How many of us have pets that help us through the bad times? Just wondering if you find pets therapeutic like I do?
I have a little dog and he is my angel - my constant sidekick. He takes my focus off of myself a lot - he is very much overly confident and self-absorbed, lol, and makes me seek out his affection, which takes my mind off myself. At the same time, he follows me everywhere with his little ball to throw and has to be near me at all times (till daddy gets home). Such a joy in my life...a bright light on dark days.
I know that animals are often used in medical hospitals for therapy, but I think that those of us with psych issues can benefit just as much if not more from the love of an animal.

my beautiful furbaby we had to have put down bcs she was hit by a car... she was my soul companion.... I recall giving her facials sitting on the deck in the summer time... and the wee thing would make me sit there and do it for like 30 mins, lol... yeah you know who was boss right! she kept me going through thick and thin.. I was crestfallen when we lost her I nearly lost the ploat
her sister... well she was my familiar.... she has separation anxiety and always knew when I needed her.. she is a lap cat and just loved me to bits and was always seeking out my attention to make sure I knew she was there.. she was the brightness in my day.... I haven't seen her in over 3 years.... she is an outdoor cat and I live in a small apartment which she would hate... my ex lives on a farm which she would love... so I gave my bubs away .. I regret it a lot lately... like if she had come with me she would have adapted... but what would happen when I am in hospital for months? I just miss her dearly atm and like my therapist worked out... I do feel like I abandoned her and it breaks my heart daily
I think pets are wonderful... they are part of the family and have so much to give us..... to have them is to be truly blessed
The summer between 5th and 6th grade we rescued my dog soulmate. Her name was Molly, she was a beagle. We lost her 3 years ago to mammary cancer. It was so hard. I don't think there will ever be another like her.
Well needless to say, the dog had a cat that didn't like people, just him. Once he died I put the cat with him so she knew that he had died. Buried him and the very next day that stupid mean horrible cat that had no name because she was a bitch cat of 9 years of age. She jumped in my lap and started being a dog. Now she's a lap cat and bugs me all the time for love. She's all old too, her face is white hair. They say you can't teach dogs new tricks but that cat really did a mind blow for everybody here. Wild
Now I am past that stage, but I have a 2 year old German Shepherd who is absolutely my baby. When I feel bad I take her out to the park and do the river walk for an hour and she always makes me feel better. I raised her from a pup and even though I am married and she loves my husband, I am "her" person. When I feel REALLY bad I go lay down in bed with her and she snuggles with me and licks my face. Best therapist ever!
I talked with my therapist about having a service dog to be with me when I am out and about (very hard for me to do alone). But my T pointed out that Maggie is so cute, I'd be drawing attention to myself instead of having my stress reduced by me pup. Idk. I'd still be happier bringing her with me wherever I go. Gotta look into that.
I have my little Rascal now and I don't know what I'd do without him
I feel badly for those who have lost loved ones... I have to and it hurts a lot... Big hugs...xo
Wasband decided to wipe it all away, drinking and using - and I was stuck with two dogs, who really - well, love me, protect me and make me laugh!
The worst depression in my life, the one that qualified me for disability - I had lost 14 pounds sleeping, not eating, moving, etc...
The two dogs managed to get out of the yard and roll in something DEAD, GROSS and STINKY.....
While giving them a bath - I realized God had a sense of humor - he was getting me OUT of that bed - even if for a few minutes : )
When I found a home with 3 sides fenced - I quickly enclosed the property, installed dog doors on the porch and kitchen door - and started fostering.....
It makes a difference to me - and at my worst, I make a huge difference to them - win/win!
I do have a pet peeve of psyche "therapy dogs" for comfort and calmness, people demanding they go in restaurants like a seeing-eye-dog... LOL not the same thing - if you dog has no manners, or training, it should not be at the next table - no matter how much you love and count on "him/her" : )
I'm slightly concerned, Gracie my shadow - has been by my side for 11 years - WTF and I going to do when she passes? Oy veh, try and not project - but I know its going to be bad!
I am looking for a work from home position, partly so that i can be with them always.
