Hello, my name is Beth and I have several mental disabilities...depression, bipolar with psychosis, anxiety, PTSD, panic disorder with agoraphobia, cognitive disorder, personality disorder..also I have sacroilitis, SI joint dysfunction, Lg. S. Facet Joint arthropathy...I am on medication for my mental issues but I can't work. I have chronic pain due to the back issues. Because of my mental issues, my partner of 6 years has to take over the financial responsibilities...I get too stressed out and go into a psychosis state when my stress level gets too high. I have been hospitalized several times, i have had ECT treatments that have caused memory problems so I have to be reminded to take meds, shower, ect...my life is no where I had expected it to be 10 years ago...
what I am asking is, is there anyone out there that can help me prepare for my hearing, I have a really good lawyer and I met with him on friday and we went over what would happen. But every time I try to prepare myself and ask myself why can't I work I panic and go blank...I really need to win this case I have been trying since 2009. Is there anyone out there that knows what kind of questions they ask for mentally disabled people? If so could someone help me? I am really scared and nervous...as the days get closer my anxiety gets more intense...yesterday I got to the point I couldn't breathe and thought I was going to black out...

I didn't really THINK too much about the hearing, nor worry about it either - I was in too much of a bad place at time to care one way or another. And the hearing occurred NOT in front of a psychiatrist - my own psychiatrist had already filled in the required reports for me....I was interviewed by the kindest and more understanding psychologist ever!
All that transpired was that he asked me a series of quetions about me, what had happened, and my predicament. I got a bit overcome with the blues when recounting why I was there, and seeking disability, and he got me a drink of water & a few kleenex so that I could compose myself.
And when he had finished interviewing me, he told me right then and there that he was approving me for the benefit. But just to remember that the final judgement call would not lie in HIS hands....but that his report, coupled with my pdoc's would be analyzed by social security & I'd receive an answer in due course.
So based on what you just told us here, I would say to you not to WORRY about this hearing at all. Don't build it up in your head, & get all nervous about it. Be yourself, be completely honest, and bear in mind that this is NOT the Spanish Inquisition - it will most likely be a mental health professional who already understands that you are in a bad place; hence that's the reason why you are there. And based on all that you have described concerning your conditions, I'd say it's long overdue that you attempted to go this route; I've seen and heard of some FRAUDS who put on "acts", yet qualify. So of al people, YOU DO deserve to be considered in the affirmative. Good luck, & keeping my fingers crossed for you. Kathleen
